Frank Elliott, of Catawba Springs, was a Hickory visitor Friday. There will be a musical recital at Lenoir College Monday night. Everybody is cordially invited. Messrs. J. W. Blackwelder and J. B. Gibbs went to Jamestown this week to "do" the Exposi tion. Mrs. M. Frank Carpenter,' of Maiden, has returned from an extended visit to her sister, Mrs. C. W. Warlick, in Pennsylvania, and is spending a few days here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Michael. Hickory's Former Base Ball Captain in Troucle. Mr. Mack McKinnon, who was captain and coach of Hickory's base ball team at the beginning: of the season is confined in the Mecklenbury county jail. A drunken negro woman struck a white woman across the face and shoulders, McKinnon inter fered whereupon the negro as saulted him. He pulled his gun and shot her. It was thought for awhile that she was fatally wounted, but the doctors now say that she will get well. Mc- Kinnon in default of a two hun dred bollar bond was sent to jail. Miss Maude Allred who was the guest of Miss Bessie Payne, returned to her home at Granite Falls Friday. Miss Annie Self, of Newton, who has been visiting her aunt, Mrs.L.R. Summerow, returned to her home Monday. Miss Nancy Summerow who has been the guest of Mrs. L. R. Summerow, returned to her home in Charlotte Friday. Walter Whisnant, the clever cashier of the First National Bank of Granite Falls, was a Hickory visitor Friday. Dr. and Mrs. Russell returned to their home Monday after spending Sunday with Mrs. Rus sell's parents, Dr. and Mrs. Mar ler. Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Player and son, William, are spenning a few days with Mr. and Mrs. W. 0. Player. Mr. E. S. Player is State Agent for the Standard Oil Co., and at Columbia. Mrs. D. W. Read spent a few days in the city last week, leav ing Monday morning for Gasto nia. She is in the employ of a large art firm and is giving art lessons in the different graded schools of the State. One of the Whist Clubs met with Mrs. Chadwick Wednesday afternoon, the 18th. Two addi tional tables made four tables to enjoy the pleasure of the game, social intercourse and refresh ments. Mrs. E. L. Shuford won the prize, a dainty fan. Mr. N. A. Whitener is hard to turn down on making home-made molasses. The reason we know whereof we speak Mr. Whitener always brings us a jug full of the the first he makes and we think every time he brings the best. The Hickory circuit parsonage of • the Methodist Episcopal Church South will be sold to the Hickory station of the same church. This house will then be given to some superanuated member of the Western North Carolina couference free of rent; the Hickory circuit purchasing or building a parsonage in the western part of the town. ( Mrs. S. P. Watson has return ed from a trip to Blowing Hock. Miss Effie White, of Greens boro spent last Thursday in the city. Col. M. E. Thornton has le turned Jrom a business trip to New York. . Mr. and Mrs. G. W." Hall were presented a fine baby girl Wed nesday night. Miss Pauline Gwaltney left Monday for Wallsburg where she will teach this year. The graded school base ball team defeated a nine from St, Paul's Seminary last Friday. Messrs, Wesley Martin and Wade Shuford spent Sunday in Lenoir with their special friends Mrs. Dr. Wilson, of Lenoir, spent a few hours in the city Thursday on her way to Morgan ton. Freeman Dietz has returned from an extensive trip to Wash ington, Jamestown and other points. Misses Ethel and Helen Foil, of Newton, have been the guests of Mrs. P. C. Hall for the last week. Miss Frankie Self left last week for Raleigh where she re sumes her studies at St. Mary's College. Miss Louise Dixon, who? has been critically ill with typhoid; fever, is again able to be on the J streets. Mr. Frank Hart spent a week j or more in New York on busi ness for the Thornton Electric Light & Power Co. Miss Rosa Bernhardt, of Salif* bury, spent Wednesday in the city. She is spending her sum mer vacation at Connelly Spring s Miss Clara Alexander left Sat urday for Charlotte, where her father met her and the two went to Jamestown and Washington. Mr. S. D. Campbell is havirg a new coat of paint put on the old Allen house on, Morganton St. Numerous improvements have also been made. Mr. John Killian, of Lincoln ton, stopped a few hours in the city last Friday with his brother, George Killian. Mr. Killian was on his way home after spendin g his vacation in Blowing Rock. The Hickory Band gave an open air concert Friday night. Prof. Barb has certainly trained his boys well. "The Love's Re sponse," a serenade, as render ed band is one of the pret tiest pieces we have ever heard. Judge Oouncil is holding court in Greensboro this week. The "Industrial News" has this to say of him: "Judge Council is peculiarly effective in his man ner of speech. He uses plain and easily understandable langu age, not raising his voice too high; but, when desiring to be emphatic, this is modulated to the meaning and there is no diculty in catching the points on which he wishes to lav any par ticular stress."
