Donald Witherspoon, of Newton, was a Hickory visitor Tuesday. • Mr. J. A. Martin has been elected secretary and treasurer of the Newton Cotton mill. Miss Annie Link has returned from a two months' visit to her brother at Fort Mill, S. C. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Flowers, of Downsville, spent Sunday in the city with their son. Mrs. Emma Taylor and Mr. I. L. Council are here at the bed side of their brother, Judge W. B. Councill, who is very HI. Mrs. 0. M. Norwood, of Char lotte, is spending a few days here with her sister, Mrs. H. M. Doll. Mr. Roy Abernethy is getting his team of football men in good shape. Some hard work was done by the boys this week. Messrs. Johnson Suttlemyre, Albert Abernethy, Charlie Cash well, Frank Henderson and oth ers went on a 'possum hunt Tues day night. - Mr. John E. Haithcock, real estate agent, hasjuftved his of fice from over Menkes Drug Co. He now occupies rooms over Mc- Comb Bros. Store. Mr. Frank Hart has gone to work at the dam of Water Power Electric Co. He is building a commisary and several tempora ry structures for the use of the laborers. The C. & N-W. has discontinu ed the use of the track on the north side of the freight depot and are now using the South ern's tracks. Thus it seems that this question has at last been settled. The new graded school build ing in Highland is nearing com pletion. It is all enclosed and will be ready for occupancy by the fifteenth of October. The entire community is looking for ward to the opening of the grad ed school on that date. For some time the officials of the water works have known that there was a leak in one or more of the pipes, but they were unable to locate the same until a few days ago. A pipe in the ruins of the Hickory Inn was found which has for several months bern emptying a good stream of water. Mr. James Branch, who has been employed by the Hickory Electric Co., has resigned his po sition to accept a similar position with the Southern Bell Tele phone Co., of Laurinburg, N. C. He left for his new home Wed nesday. Hickory regrets to see this fine young man leave the city, but is glad that he has ad vanced another round on the lad der of*suCcess. Squire Mouser finished burning a large kiln of brick last week, i Mrs. W. N. Martin and J. G. Hall, Jr., spent Sunday in Lenoir. Mayor Clark, of Highland, lu s been quite busy gathering his fine pea hay. f The small son of Mr. Robt. L. Pope, who has been quite sick, is much improved. The street force will soon go to ( work in straightening and clean-! up the streets in Highland. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Shvtford have just returned from visiting the Exposition. Miss Mattie Rheinhardt, of Lincolnton,is visiting Miso Lucile Shuford. Prof. Robt. Wilson, of the Guilford College faculty, was a Hickory visitor Monday. Mr. Fred Abernethy has re turned from a business trip to .St. Louis, Mo. J. B. Johnson has moved his family to the handsome home he recently bought in West Fair view. The Hickory Hunting Club have ordered two fine fox hounds from a well known hunter of Illinois. Mr. Eck Abernethy, of Bridge- j water, spent Sunday in the city : with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Abernethy.
