The Hickory Band went down to play for the sale and did their best, in spite of the rain. Their playing was highly praised. A Narrow Escape. No. 35 came near having one, of the worst wrecks ever last Saturday night. About a half mile from Claremont, at the "deep-cut," the brakes were put on so suddenly as to send pas sengers over seats, into each other's laps, every old way. The whistle blew furiously, the cars rocked was jerked from side, frightened passengers ran to the doors which would not open, ■creamed and swore —in short it was "a time." The engine had struck a horse, cutting :>ff its hind legs, and onjy the air brakes prevented the train from having a bad wreck. When first seen the horse and buggy were com ing straight dowirthe track. The supposition is that the horse was tied and either worked itself loose or was untied. The Hickory Band boys were aboard, returning from the lot sale at Statesville, and the boys say they were "scared* plenty." TALK The Real Estate Man ~ - N MCKORYS' GRADED SCHOOL DLDG. The principal reason for such attempt at substitution is either the desire of the store keeper to sell something on which he can make more money, or he has'nt the goods asked for, and wants to make a sale of some thing in its place.
