Lippard, missionary to Japan; at!
night both these gentlemen ad- j
dressed the audience. !
We call attention to the adver- j
tisement of the First National
Bank appearing in this issue. At j
a time when there is such lack of i i
confidence it is well to note the
tone in which the officers of this
bank declare their prosperous !
standing.

the day was the Maypole Dance,
and very pretty and "cute" It
was. The Democrat joins the

It was at first understood, and
is so stated*'in the Statesville
Landmark that Mr. Scroggswa?
to come to Hickorv and Rev.
"Father" Weavor to Statesville
The people of Hickory can harc 1 -
1 r love Dr. Weaver more than
they do now; and the thought of
having him among them is the
one thing that comforts them in
their deep regret at giving up
Mr. Bagby. . The latter gentle
man has been a favorite with all
classes and denominations here
from the time he first began Yis
pastoral work, and time has only
strengthened the tie between
him and the people here. Peace
go with him.

dition of the streets, a large
crowd attended the gathering to
celebrate the opening: of High
land Hall at Lenoir College. Dr.
R. A. Yoder, of Lincolnton, the
first principle of the college,
made the opening address in
which he traced the progress of
the school from its beginning.
Col. J. G. Hall, of Lenoir, made
the address which opened the
b jilding as a part of the institu
tion. In it, he went back to the
days when Hickory was a waste
place, and outlined her progress
since the days of his youth.
These addresses were splendid
efforts of the orator's art, and
the Democrat regrets inability
to give them in full.
SURPRISE MARRIAGE.
KJ
Popular Couple Wed Suddenly
Hickory had something of a
sensation this morning when it
was learned that Mr. J. C. Mar
tin and Miss Annie Little had
been quietly married at the Rec
tory last evening at 7:30. They
left on the next train for a short
trip to New York and other
points North.
It had been known for some
1 time to the intimate friends of
the couple that there would prob
ably be a marriage in the near
future; but matters had been
kept too quiet for a hint of their
purposes to leak out. Mr. Mar
tin is one of our best known bus
iness men, popular with all who
know him, and the bride is a
charming woman, with friends
wherever she is known. The
Democrat extends best wishes.
