Public Building for Hickory
On Dec. 3rd Congresman E
Y. Webb introduced a bill ir
Congress to provide public build
ings for Hickory and Gastonia,
each to cost SIOO,OOO.
Just suppose it had happened
under a Democratic administra
tion,
It is worthy of note that the
editors who grow most indig
nant over "confiscatory" passen
ger rates, have nothing to say
about discriminatory freight
rates.
Chancellor Day of Syracuse
University comes out in defence
of the trusts. Possibly he has just
taken this method of letting it
be known that he has no foolish
prejudice against tainted money.
Another phase of the rate liti
gation between the State and the
railroads will come up before a
federal judge in Alabama next
month. It is not known, as yet,
whether the State will take an
appeal.
And now President Finley says
the railroads must get out of
politics. While the country
would regret to lose Mark Twain,
still in the event of his death,
this latest utterance of Mr. Fin
ley shows that American humor
will not suffer so long as the
President of the Southern Rail
way survives.
While a New York lawyer was
standing with his back to his of
fice door in order to give the
type-writer girl an opportunity
to remove a speck of dust from
his eye, his wife unexpectedly
entered the room. While his eye
sight is better than ever the doc
tors say that he will be perma
nently bald.
Hickory and the Methodist
Orphanage.
Hickory has a very good pros
pect of securing the Methodist
Orphanage if our people will be
stir themselves properly. The
W. N. C. Conference proposes to
establish this worthy institution
at some desirable point in West
ern or Piedmont North Carolina.
That it will help the town that
secures it both from an advertis
ing and financial point of view,
goes without saying. But the
Orphanage cannot be secured
without an energetie effort. Lin
colnton, Concord and Ruther*
fordton propose to compete.
There is no reason why Hickory
should not offer equal, if not su
perior advantages. Why not call
amass meeting and appoint a
committee to see what can be
done. Our fellow townsman,
Mr. Geo. P. Ivey, is a member of
the committee appointed to lo
cate the institution. Let us see
what our place can offer and no
doubt Mr. Ivey will see that
Hickory gets a hearing.

"Our little boy had eczema for five
years," writes N. A. Adams, Henriet

DO NOT KNOW WHAT
CAUSES SICKNESS
Modern People Have Many Names for Same
Diseases, According to New Belief.
Does human health depend on one
organ alone? This question Is becom
ing widely discussed since L. T.
Cooper 3 ret advanced his theory that
the stomach is the true seat of life
and all health dependent upon it.
Mr. Cooper, who has met with re
markable success in the sale of his
new medicine, believes that the stom
ach is responsible for most sickness,
and that this organ is weak in the
present generation. While discussing
this theory recentiy, he said: "1 am
asked time and again to tell why my
medicine has made such a record
wherever I have Introduced it My
answer always is, 'because it restores
the stomach to a normal condition.'
No one will deny that today there'are
more half-sick men and women than
ever before. Nothing critical seems to
be the matter with them. They are
just half-sick most of the time. They
don't know really what Is the matter
with them. I have talked with thou
sands during the past two years, and
few knew indeed what their trouble
was. One said nervousness, another
said kidney trouble, another liver com
plaint, some constipation, or heart
trouble, or lung trouble. Many had
treated, as they called it, for most of
these diseases at different times. A
very common complaint is 'all run
down,' or tired all the time,* or *no
appetite.' H
"I know positively that every bit of
this chronic ill health Is caused by
stomach trouble, and nothing else. My
New Discovery puts the stomach in
sound condition in about six weeks.
Mighty few people can be sick with a

Fluid Extract Dandelion, one-iiaU
ounce; Compoud Kargon, one ounce;
Compound Syrup Sarsaparilla, three
ounces.
Shake well in a bottle and" take a
teaspoonful dose after each meal and
at bedtime.
The above is considered by an emi
nent authority, who writes in a New
York daily paper, as the finest pre
scription ever written to relieve Back
ache, Kid&ey Trouble, Weak Bladck
and all forms of Urinary difficulties.
! This mixture acts promptly on the
eliminative tissues of the Kidneys, en
abling them to filter and strain the
uric acid and other waste matter from
the blood which causes Rheumatism.
Some persons who suffer with the
afflictions may not feel inclined to
place much confidence in this simple
mixture, yet those who have tried it
say the results are simply surprising,
the relief being effected without the
•slightest injury to the stomach or other
organs.
Mix some and give it a trial. It
certainly comes highly recommended.
It is the prescription of an eminent
authority, whose entire reputation, it is
said, was established by it.
A druggist here at home when
asked stated that he could either sup
ply the ingredients or mix the pre
scription for our readers, also recom
mends it as harmless.

sound digestion. That is why my med
icine is selling at such a tremendous

sands of people that these things are
so, and the number is growing by
leaps and bounds."
Among more recent converts to Mr.
Cooper's beliefs is Mr. Edgar L. Hinds,
living at 6 Tappan Street, JSrerett,
Mass. Mr. Hinds has this «Ay on
the subject:
"I have suffered with stomach
trouble for eight years. I was not sick
enough to be in bed, but just felt bad
all the time. My greatest trouble was
that I always felt tired, would get up
in the morning feeling as tired as
when I went to bed.
"I had a very irregular appetite, sad
was troubled with dizzy spells. If I
stood for any length of time, I would
have a dull pain in the lower part of
my back. I was nervous and felt all
the time as though something terrible
was going to happen. I tried many
kinds of medicine; but nothing ever
helped me.
1 had about given up all hope at
ever being In good health again, when
I heard so much of Cooper and d» i
elded to. try his medicine. I took one
bottle of his New Discovery and was
greatly surprised at the result JL
gained 12 pounds in a few weeks. 1
can now eat anything I wish, and fed
like a new man. I cheerfully recom
mend this medicine to all sufferers '
from stomach trouble."
It is worth anyone's time, who ts not
enjoying good health, to learn of Mr.
Cooper's wonderful preparations. We
ape selling them to huge Quantities,
