THURSDAY DEC. 12, 1907 TAFT'S TASK In this , day and generation signs are not propitious for the administration's plans to control the next Republican national convention. Two distinct, set backs have struck the forces of the administration, one beinp the endorsement of Foraker's condidacy by the Republican committee of Ohio, and the oth er the selection of Chicago over Kansas City as the convention's place of meeting. Taft's forces it appears, will have to get along with a minority of the Ohio dele gation. Foraker's support of the negro soldiers who shot up the town of Brownsville, Texas is said to have won him the solid negro vote -of Ohio which a mounts to fifty thousand. Alto gether, the prospect for the ad ministration is not rosy. North Carolina is one of the states tha voted for Chicago. Telegraphers met in Hickory. One of the largest gatherings of the kind ever held here was one held last Saturday evening under the auspices of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers, who met here at the invitation of the telegraphers of Hickory, and were royally entertained by them at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Huffman. The object of the meeting was exolained as follows: "To culti' vato closer relations, to get ac quainted and know each other better, and to stimulate brother ly feelings.*' Hon. A. A, Whitner was then introduced, and after welcoming the telegraphers to the city, he made a most appropriate ad dress, which was much enjoyed and appreciated by all present. Mr. R. B. Stone, of Asheville; superintendent of the block sys tem was present, and made an interesting anil encouraging talk, expressing himself in favor of the worthy object of the meet ing, especially commending the social feature of the same. Other talks were made, in which it was showed that the block system, which the South ern Railway, it is said, proposes to abolish, had been instrumen tal in raising the net profits of the Asheville Division, from SIO,OOO to $103,000 per month since its installation last spring. Choice selections,of music was rendered by Miss Ora Huffman, whose talent as a musician is of more than local reputation. The meeting adjourned to meet here again next month in the opera house. About fifty tele graphers and their families were present, and matters of interest to themselves as well as their employers were discussed. After the meeting luncheon and delightful refreshments were saved, and everybody went •way delighted at the success of the meeting and at the manner in which they were entertained. When winds shriek high in fiendish glee, And enters winter with his key ftoteet yourself, from disease be free Take Hollister's Rocky Mountain Tea. E. B. Menzies. Social Tuesday Dec. 3, Mrs. Marvin Sherrill entertained her Bridge Club with additional tables. Mrs. Bryan Jones won : v e prize. De lightful refreshments in courses were enjoyed after the game. Mrs. W. J. Shuford's "At Home" the afternoon of Dec. 4th was fully attended in spite of .the driving snowstorm. Five tables >f Bridge was the amusement of the hour. Mrs. Marvin Sherrill won the prize, Delicacies in i courses ended a oelightful even ing. The Traveller's Club met with M.s. J. A. Martin Thursday af ternoon Dec. 5, With fifteen mem bers present. Quotations from Samuel Lover proceeded Mrs Chadwick's topic 'The Debt English Literat ire owes to Ire land"—This was computed in ..wo ways, first ti rough the in fluence of Irish Characters upon the writings|of Englishmen from Spenser, through Shakespeare, Keats and Shelly, then the writ ngs of Irishmen themselves for Erin has left an undying litera- I lure of her own in the EM *> iish language, as is attested by Gold smith Sheridan, Burke, Steele, Tom Moore. Mrs. Gwaltney's article "Irish Novels" was omitted because of her absence on account of Dr. Gwaltney's illness. Mrs. Huf man gave a very interesting ac count of the most prominent Irish novelists: "Jane Barlow, Samuel Lover, C.iarles Severe, etc." Mrs. Bost read with ap preciation Dowl.ng's "Dublin Castle," an extract of much whimsical force. Current events brought out some facts worthy of remembrance. With the delica cies served at the close of the literary program were souvenirs: Pictures of Goldsmith with quo tations from his writings. The Annual reception was decided upon to be given Thursday, Jan. 2nd, 1908 at Mr O. M, Roys ters. , SSOO Stolen in ide County. At Edith, on th night of the 10th, the safe ir * store of Mr. Walter Alley viu blown open and SIOO in ino. ey, a silver watch and some razors stolen. On the same night. at Sherrill's Ford, the safe of Brown, and Cornelius, and S4OO was taken. The last robbery was committed about three in the morning. It is evidently the W'»rk of a pro fessional man, low and thick-set who had been seen in the neigh borhood and could not be found after the robbery.
