Hall which occurred Feb. 2nd, 6 o'clock p. m. removes from our midst one of the most prominent men of Hickory. A good citizen, a faithful friend and a christain gentle man. Mr. Hall came to Hick-' ory in 1873 as a member of the old and well known firm of Hall Bros. His whole life had be?n one of activity and was identi fied with the best interests to : advance the welfare of Hickory. In his death the Presbyterian church has lost a faithful eider and one who always had at i! heart the advancement of the , ' course of Christ, j "God touched him*with His finger, and he slept," the peet wrote. So may we say of this dear life—"God touched him with His finger, and he slept," j but not until a beautiful life was lived, a noble example of . patienee, Maiity to truth and faith were green. My opinions bind no Jinan; but justice a»sd right bind • j every man. j If all use of the whip for dis cipline in the home and in school t 1 is wrong, unjust, then truly it ■ all ought to be abolished. On tiie other hand- if a corrective use of the rod is just and expedi ' ent, safe and sane government ' will retain it to the end of time. If the principle of love de mands it as the Bible teaches , 'then Christians who heed what . the Bible says will always ap prove the just and necessary . use of the rod. Nobody sanctions cruel, or un • just, indiscriminate whipping. , No doubt, some of this character ~of punishment has \been inflict -led upon some children, but the amount of it is always small compared with correction needed but neglected in our homes and our schools. ; Materialism and collusion with all their offspring have wrought destruction in philosophy,, reli gion, society and morals. Witness the prevalence of graft, suicide, homicide, divorce and the efforts ito overturn whatever has been established by wisdom and ex perience in the past. The cate chysm of course affects our schools. There is everywhere evident impatience of control* and contempt for lawful author- j ity. Teachers are subjects of everybody's criticism and any body's backbiting. The plastic minds of children receive tlw impression that the best teacher is too bad to be tolerated. The j , present state of affairs is tfie result of causes operating j , through a long period of time. The mis-education of our woris by false principles, one of which is this: Every child is pure in nocence, and has in it only ele- j ments of good. Hence by this | • false premise, love alone will: \ evolve all that is good and desir- j able in the child; and harsh treatment will sow seeds of evil in the child's heart. The Bible throughout teaches tha contrary of this. But what is the teach ing of this Holy book, if we will not receive it? I Higher critics, free thinkers and all who subject the thoughts of God to their own reason, are in opposition to the Bible. Only ■ those who receive it as a per fect book. infallible, containing; God's word to men, to all men ; and unchangeable to the end of j time, will be disposed to -obey j its precepts. i True there is a change of dispensation, from the Old Cov enant (Testament) to the New. But this change consists simply in the unfolding of the divine plan of salvation. The duties of man to man, of child to parent and teacher are the same in both Testaments. It is a great mis flfte to si ppose that the book of Proverbs or any other Old Testa ment book was written for teni porarv use, to be obsolete. In toe Old Testament it is written: ''Forever, O Jehovah, Thy word is settled in heaven," In the New Testament: "Whatever ] things were written aforeti.ne 1 were written for our learning.'' j This includes the things written ;in Old Testament scriptures about bringing up children and the use of the rod. Speaking of this same thing, the Nev Testa ment says*. "All chastening seemeth for the present to be ! not joyous, but grievous; yet i afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit to thee that have been ex l ercised thereby, even the fruit ■ of righteousness." J. S. K. } KEEPING OPEN HOUSE. Everybody is welcome when we feel good: and we feel that way only s when our digestive organs are working s properly.
