We have just received the cat alogue of the University of North Carolina for the session 1907- 1908. It shows an attendance of 788 students. The faculty numbers 74. Home Comes and Goes Col. Ashley Home, candidate for Governor, spent yesterday in the city among his numerous friends. He went out of the city to-day to further his interest in other sections and will return to Charlotte Wednesday for a visit of several days. Col. Home's sup porters are becoming more and more encouraged over his pros pects for polling a large vote in this county in the coming prima ry.—Evening Chronicle. What's the Use. One of Hickory's most useful citizens in a conversation held re cently said that attending court in a neighboring county, five il licit distillers were brought to trial. No less than forty wit nesses were in attendance and yet out of the whole crowd, not one would give such testimony as would convict either of the prisoners, so all were discharged Drive the stuff bevond the State! While we have it . within our bounds it will be our curse. Save the Trees. Broadening the street that runs through where our beauti ful Inn once stood caused the re moval of some trees that were a great loss to the town. There can be no such ornament to any street as a well grown tree vigorous, graceful, blessing to every wayfarer with its shade. And |t cannot be replaced. Money can do much, but the growth of a tree is a work of t?me. Thaw Signs Petition. James G. Graham, counsel, ac ting for Harry K. Thaw; late Tuesday presented an order is sued James Morschau ser, of the Supreme Court, di recting Dr. A. T. Baker, acting superintendent of the Matteawan Hospital, to permit-Thaw to sign a petition for a writ of habeas corpus for his appearance in court to determine the question of his sanity. Dr, Baker, readily complied with the court's order and ushered Mr. Graham into Thaw's ward. Thaw was greatly pleased with the steps taken and held a long conference with coun sel after signing the petition. High School Certificates. At every county seat in tEe State April 24th and 25th will be held by the county superintend ent of schools examination of all persons desiring certificates to teach public high schools. The questions prepared by the State board of examiners are being mailed from the State Depart ment of Education. The exam ination papers will be graded by the State board of examiners. Lunatic Captured. Last Thursday night Messrs. F. P, and L. W. Poovey found an insane man in the, bridge over the Catawba river three miles from town, The poor fel low was bare-footed, and half clad. He was brought here fcr safe keeping and put jn the lock up. His name is Abraham Falls, Mr. G. E. Patton of Morganton came down and took him back. Lutz, manager of Lenoir mills, comes out in the Lenoir Topic in a card denying the truth of a report that a special detective had found "talc" adul teration in flour from the mills. Mr. J. 6.
