The subject of the sermon at the Reformed church next Sun day morning will be, "The Christmas song." Mr. James Drum of West Hickory killed a porker this week that weighed 495 pounds net. The hog was thirteen months old. Who can beat this? . J. A, Herndon has moved his family to Kinston, N. C., where he has accepted the position as superintendent of the North State Mutual Life Ins Co. Miss Ella Deal who has been teaching in Henderson County for the past few months passed through Hickory a few days ago en route for her home at Lenoir. She was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Mace while in Hickory. Prof. Staley asked us to state in the Democrat that the graded school would close for two weeks during Christmas. School would open for work Jan. 4th 1909, at 2* o'clock Friday of this week there wilf be exercises in the auditorium beginning at 1. o'clock. Parents are invited. Esq. L. R. Whitener's first case came up at his office last Saturday and was a rather inter esting affair. R, D. Latta and C. M. Sherrill were sued by M. L.
