Many people have expressed their appreciation of our effort? to awaken an interest in the up building: of our town. Some have spoken words of cheer to us while others have written ut encouraging letters expressing their sympathy with our work. These things do not make us vane but they do make us fee that our fforts are appreciated. Thank you, brethren. A Business Directory for the Post Office. Postmaster Hamrick has ob tained permission from the Post Office Department for the Cham ber of Commerce to place a class ified Business Directory and a Church Directory in the P. O. lobby in this city. Secretary Gilbert has accord ingly placed two nicely finished oak frames with glass panels in which will appear a nicely print ed list of our representative bus iness firms and professional men, hotels, boarding houses, etc. Secretary Gilbert and Post master Hamrick are to be con gratulated upon their success ir securing this permission, as such a directory will do much to ad vertise our town to the stranger who stops with us for only a short time. The Subway. Evidently the city father? have become fully convinced that the subway is resting too sweetly to be further disturbed at this time for they have called off their force waiting for the commencement of work by the Railroad company. If the old Patriarch had lived through 1908 in Hickory and caught the inspiration that our pure mountain air is charged with, instead of the poisoning damp coming up from the muck holes of the river Nile, we think his talk to the old reprobate would have been something like this: "good king. Pharoah, live forever." " Happy to meet you and some thing to eat and by the way. we had a little panic over in Canaan, Cow and sheep ranching kinder petered out. Me and the Boys came down looking for a j job till business looks up." Old j Jake was just-throwing saw dust |in the old kind's eyes. He didn't mean it. But for the time limit he would have done him up right. Talk about hard times in Hick ory, you forget about Dr. Mur phy's Thanksgiving sermon. As he toucned the beautiful flower pinned 4 to his coat and declared that we were under the benign influence of Grandfather ar.d Grandfhother mountains, Im mune from the icy breezes that i blight the summer roses. And our prospective hotel with its multiplicity of rooms, and up-to late appointments, street car line, Postoffice building, meet ing of-the Methodist conference. Real estate boom, buying and selling and geting gain, business enterprises. Galore. Witness how we rushed out 1908 and rushed in 1909, with ex ; plosions and bell ringing. Could a pesimistic citizenship take part in such inthusiasm? Never! It is true that some ef our en thusiast put a little too much powder in one of the shoot-offs, ' and doubtless they were more supprised than anyone else at the noise it made.
