Bikers,— Fued Ove> Business Transaction Th: Cause. Charlotte, Feb. 10.—With bu' a moment in which to speak, Mr. J. G. Hood was shot yesterda? morning in front of the Central hotel by Mr. Will S. Biggers, i former business associate. Biggers fired four shots thm of which took effect. After th* first shot which took effect ir Hood's forehead, the victim threw up his hands and exclaim ed: "For God's sake, don't dc that" Unheeding the plea Big gers fired another shot which entered the victim's face. Hood then pitched forward in his own blood. Biggers then bent for ward and fired another shot into the back of his victim's head. ..JHood was at once carried tc the Charlotte Sanitorium wherf he died fifty minutes after the shooting. Mr. Hood was nnarmed and was taken entirely off his guard. Biggers was at once arrested without resisting and was carried to the cell where he ravediike a maniac. The trouble grew out of form er business relations betweer Hood and Biggers. The two\men were at one time engaged in "mercantile business together alra Biggers claims that Hood caused him to !o*e tomething like $3,000. Biggers owned property in Charlottee on which he was neg- deal, but owing to the fact that Hood had a claim or the property, the deal was caller* off. Friends and legal f alent had tried to get the matter adjuster!, but Hood would not relent, ano Biggers had been greatly wor ried over the matter for several days. The strain is supposed to have unbalance the mind of Biggers. Prominent Asheviile Man a Suicide Asheviile Feb., 7. James M. Hyatt, a prominent business man of this place committed suicide this morning shortly af ter 8 o'clock by slashing his throat with a razor. Mr. Hyatt picked up his razor and other shaving materials and went down fttairs telling his wife he was going to shave. After he had been gone sever al minutes, Mrs. Hyatt had ocas aion to go down stairs and, try ing the door, found it locked. She then tried another door lead ing to the room and found it locked also. She called to her husband but received no re sponse, and becoming alarmed, she called to the neighbors who forced the door and found Hyatt lying in a pool of blood with his throat cut from ear to ear. A physician was summoned but Hyatt died before the physician's arrival. Hyatt was 40 years of age and had been a successful merchant in Asheyille for a number cf years. No cause other than ill health can be assigned for the rash act. The health of this vicinity hae oeen fairly good. We looked for the cold snap »nd were not deceived. It is a general thing that when the noon fulls near the sign Craw nsh you cannot look for a cool .ime, as the moon always runs nigher in the sign of the Craw fish. Charlie Finger has moved a tenant to his farm from Burke county. The work hands at the Simp son ford bridge are progressing nicely with their work. One of the old piers is deficient so that it has to be torn down and a new one built, which will de lay the time for persons to cross it. The farmers are haulii g their sweet potatoes to Charlotte. Peter Yoder and his brother 3. L. Yoder from Asheville are now in the South on a horse trading expedition. They have b*en gene about three weeks. Will Hicks has sold his timber on his farm to Shu ford and Men zies for SI,OOO and has moved his sawmill there to cut for the market. A Mr. Mowry has moved on the Mo es Yoder t'ann as a tenant. Originally from Meck lenburg county. L. S. Ritchey has put up a corn mill at the "little village of Biackbnrn, and also a mill to grind cotton seeds. Chas. Shuford and his brother lohn went to Oklahoma a few Jays ago. Our good old neighbo., o* T » r F. K. Beck ha 3 been on the sick list for some time. He's an oIJ aged man of about 84 vears. Mrs. Barbara Leonard and her sister-in-law Mrs. Mary A Bur lesson were on a visit at F. A. Yoder on last Thursday. Rusticus. Church Of The Ascension. Services next Sun iay at 11 a. m., with Holy Commnnion. In the evening the Rector will ad dress the men of the Reformed Church under special request of Dr. Murphy. Next week the Convocation of Morgan ten will meet in Hickory for two days service—Wednes day and Thursday. Many speak ers will be present and present lay church problems will be dis cussed. On Thursday, Feb. 18 a Sunday School Institute will be held at 11 a. m.,at 3 p. m. and a gain at 7:30 p. m., when Rev. Dr Swope of Biltmore will lead in discussion.
