Edwards of Rutherford College spent yester day in the city. Dr. A. M. Dula of Morganton was a visitor in Hickory the first of the week. The. Misses Amy and jJulia Wheeler are paying a visit to New York. T. P, Cloninger, who has been visiting his daughter at Burling ton, has returned to the city. T. J. Regan and wife, who have been visiting at Linoolnton and at Denver, returned to the city on Monday. Mrs. D. W. Holder was the first to bring green beans on the market Tuesday morning. * The firemen sold 258 tickets for their carriage raffle, and the vekicle was won bv F. J. Flagler, who held ticket 383. The Piedmont Grocery Co. lost one of the finest horses in town, falued at $3OO, by eolic on Wed nesday. Misses Mildred and Lillian Stallings of Danville, Va. will, spend the summer with Miss Sadie Wetherspoon. Miss Alice Wetherspoon en tertained the Junior League of the M. E. Church Monaay night. There were about 25 present, and after the business program was over. Misses Mil dred and Lillian Stalling enter tained the party with music after which refreshments were served. We are prepared to back him against any sweet «nr-*r I the Observer caa produce.- At the special school election on Monday, out af 352 registered votes 224 voted, of whom 211 east their ballots for the propos ed tax. This was 44 more than the necessary number and as sures the much desired improve ment in the schools. The First Building and Loan Association, having purchased the building on Fourteenth street now occupied by H. Abee will soon move into it. Mr. Abee will take the building below, oc cupied until recently by the Southern Wood Works, and will move as soon as the repairs now in progress are completed. The Ivey Cotton mills, and perhaps others, will also have offices there. - The Davidson College Orches tra and Glee Club will be here Wednesday June 9. The Club have taken two preliminary trips previous to this, and at every place met with a hearty reception and rendered a much appreciated program showing college life as the campus sees and hears it. The net proceeds of this concert will go to the pipe organ fund of the Presbyterian church. At the church of The Ascension there will be services next Sun day—the Feast of the Trinity, at 11 a m and at 8p m. The Holy Communion at the morning ser vice and the subject of the ad dress will be—Gods two great Pentecostal Gifts." The sermon at night is the Rectors long promised and care fully prepared address on "Presbyterianism, a friendily glance with a view to Church Reunion. Mrs. W. A. Hall and Mrs. M. H. Groves entertained seven tables of Bridge Thursday after noon May 27th at Mrs Hall's home. Mrs Jones and Miss Sad ie Jones of Lenoir were present. Mrs. Beard won the prize, an en tertaining book, "The .-Music Master" by Charles Klein. Mrs G. N. Hutton drew the consola tion prize,pin balls, and Mrs Neil Clarke a pack of cards, the prize. Delicious cream and cake with coffee and fudge concluded a delightful hour. Miss Annie Douglas Liell has a short sketch in the June number of Recreation, Riving some notes of a horseback ride in the moun tains of Western N. C./ The party she was with made their headquarters afe Highlands, and evidently enjoyed their trip greatly. The writer says: "The mountains in North Carolina are as beautiful and unspoiled as any in America. The natives are the warmest-hearted people on earth." Rev. and Mrs. J. G. Garth are the hosts of a family house party. The guests are: Mrs. V. B. Vosr heis, and her daughters, itfrs. Orch Thompson and Miss Char lotte Voorheis, of Union City, Tenn,, mother and sisters of Mrs. Garth; C. V. Voorheis, brother of Mrs. Garth, and his wife, and little daughter, Viginia, of East St. Louis, 111. Also Miss Ethel Wood, of New Bern N. C. The new time table of the C. &N. W. R. R. went into effect on Sunday, the 30th ult. North bound trains now leave at 11.55 a. m., daily, and at 7:40 p. m. on weekdays, Southbound trains leave at 6.50 a. m. on weekdays and at 2:52 y, m. dailv, Capt. Hyde Ross, who has been a pas senger conductor on this road for many years, leaves that posi tion to become traveling agent. He will be greatly missed by his patrons, but is heartily con-1 gratulated on his well deserved promotion. A Narrow Escape. A serious and what might have been a fatal accident occured on Fourteenth street on Sunday. Mr. Fred Teague, of Granite Falls, accompanied by Miss Mam mie Icard of the same place and Mjps Maggie Branch, night ope rator at the local telephone ex change. were driving down the street when the horse became frightened and started to run. Miss Icard in her fright,jump ed from the buggy, taking the reins with ner. Mr. Teague, in an endeavor to secure them also jumped out, but was unsuccess ful in his endeavors. As the horse turned the corner Miss Branch was also thrown out. Miss Icard was taken to the house of Mrs. Holden on 12th ave., where she was found to be quite badly injured about the back of the. head and neck, and it was un safe to move her for several days. Miss Branch was not much hurt and is able to attend to her duti es. Mr. Teague also was not seriously injured.
