R. F. D. No. 1. \
We suppose that the many
readers of the HICKORY DEMO
CRAT would like hear from old
uncle Rusticus and know what
he has to say about this rainy
weather. Well we can say that
we have no recollection of such
a time during our sojourning in
t'ie old world for the last 83
years nearly. But the farmers
are jogging and digging along
as best they can fighting General
Green and his mighty rcot that
made a prominent stand against
them and their allies, but they
are about to prove successful in
vanquishing him and drive him
into oblivion and into the abyss
below.
The farmers are nearly
through with their summer work
and can almost see their end.
They are beginning to feel happy
that they can rest from tneii
labors. The whistling steam
engines are now rolling through
the land from house to house to
thresh the farmers' wheat ano
oats. Cotton is doing fairly well
and is about free of that terrible
enemy grass. The potato crop
is looking fine and a great many
slips have been tranplanted this
year. Our apple and peach croi
is a failure, but Rusticus has
been feasting on green roasting
ears from his garden from the
23d of June last to the present,
with a mixture of beans and
bacon. All these things are not
very hard to take when a man is
hungry. Rusticus has been
plucking figs for several weeks
from his fig tree, and they are
lucious and sweet to the taste.
The tree is loaded with therr
and in several weeks will have a
fine crop.
There is but little genera!
news in this part of the world at I
present. The health i > fine.
The young peoples' picnic or.
the 3rd of July was well attend
ed by them, and made a grant
success, and when the evening
was approaching they went over
to Thomas Shuford's store to
have an ice cream supper, which
was a success. Charles Brown
had one also at his house, when
a large crowd attended. While
these two ice cream suppers
were in full bloom a band of
roughs left Charles Brown's
house for the ice cream at Shu
ford's, on their way they came
first to Enloe Yoder's cotton
house and gave it a terrible
storm of rocks and split the
weather boarding pretty badly.
They then pursued their way
'further on shouting and shoot
ing. The next thing they, like
Sampson, put forth their
strength and threw John Angle's
(colored), cotton house on its
side. These roughs ought to be
ashamed of themselves for treat
ing this hard laboring and in
dustrious poor negro in such a
style. Roughs, you had better
consider the matter well. If the
grand jury gets a hold of it you
may be clothed with the chain
and placed into the chain gang.
Many tax payers say that they
feel glad that the county com
missioners did not levy that road
tax at present. We, for one,
think that when they want a tax
for road purposes the vote of the
people ought to say so at the
ballot box, and let the majority
rule, which is democratic.

Hats in Church.
A Statesville lady whose hus
band refuses to go to church be
cause the headgear of the ladies
often obscures his view of the
preacher, suggests that a ruling
be made compelling the women
who wear large hats to take the
back seats and the men the front
seats of the church. It is true
that this plan would solve the
problem to some extent, but most
men prefer sitting beside their
friends of the fairer sex. The
plan would also be of convenience
to those women who spend most
of their time in church inspect
ing and commenting on the attire
of their fellow women. It makes
little difference to this class
whether they see the preacher.
They are more interested in hats
and dresses.—Statesville Land

Many Hickory Citizens Have
Discovered it.
Just what to do when the kidneys
1 are affected, is a question that con
cerns both young and old. Weak
kidneys neglected in childhood lead
to life-long suffering. People of ad
vanced years, with less vitality, suffer
doubly. In youth or age, languor,
backache, urinary irregularity, dizzi
ness and nervousness make life a bur
I den.
There is one remedy that acts di
rectly on the kidneys and cures these
troubles, Doan's Kidney Pills owe
their world-wide fame to the fact that
they cure sick kidneys and cure them
permanently. Follow the example of
this Hickory citizen and you will be
convinced that this is so.

Better Not Get
Dyspepsia
If you can help it. Kodol prevents Dyspepsia, by
effectually helping Nature to Relieve Indigestion.
But don't trifle with Indigestion.
A great many people who have
trifled with indigestion, have been
sorry for it —when nervous or
chronic dyspepsia resulted, and
they have not been able to cure it.
Use Kodol and prevent having
Dyspepsia.
Everyone is subject to indiges
tion. Stomach derangement follows
stomach abuse, just as naturally
and just as surely as a sound and
healthy stomach results upon the
taking of Kodol.
When you experience sourness
of stomach, belching of gas and
nauseating fluid, bloated sensation,
gnawing pain in the pit of the
stomach, heart burn (so-called),
diarrhoea, headaches, dullness or
chronic tired feeling—you need Ko
dol. And then the quicker you take
Kodol—the better. Eat what you
want, let Kodol digest it.
Ordinary pepsin "dyspepsia tab
lets," physics, etc., are not likely
to be of much beneflt to you, in
digestive ailments. Pepsin is only
C, M. Shuford
a partial digester—and physics are
not digesters at all.
Kodol is a perfect digester. If
you could see Kodol digesting every
particle oT food, of all kinds, in the
glass test-tubes in our laboratories,
you would know this just as well
as we do.
Nature and Kodol will always
cure a sick stomach—but in order
to be cured, the stomach must rest.
That is what Kodol does —rests the
stomach, while the stomach gets
well. Just as simple as A, B, C.
Our Guarantee
Go to your druggist today and get a dol
lar bottle. Tlien after you have used tlis
entire contents of the rattle if you can
honestly say, that it has not done you any
good, return the bottle to the druggist and
he will refund your money -without ques

gist for the bottle. Don't hesitate, all
druggists know that our guarantee is good.
