Bisanar left Wednesday night for New York to buy his holiday goods. J, W. Mouser left Tuesday to go to Gilbert. S. C., to attend a meeting of Synod. Born to Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Seagle a fine boy. Congratula tions are extended. J. W. Ballew has returned home from Lenoir after spending a few days with friends. Miss Minda McManaway, of Charlotte, is here visiting her cousin, Miss Mattie Dozier. Mrs. Emma Taylor has return ed from Blowing Rock and will spend the winter in the city. R. E. Ingold will leave Satur day for Atlanta, Ga., where he will this year complete his course in dentistry* Mesdames Gwaltney, Harte and Bradshaw attended a wom an, s missionary meeting at Lin colnton this week. Misses Fanny and Kathryn Cochrane of Newton were shop ping in the city Wednesday with Miss Olive Ingold. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Martin and Dr. and Mrs. Walter White went to New York last we°k to the Hudson-Fulton celebration, j Football game. Lenoir College vs D. and D. Morganton, Mon day, Oct. 11. Game will be call at 3:30 on the ground at Lenoir College. Miss Hazel Matthews, daugh ter of Rev. W. T. Matthews, of Durant, Okla., stopped over here for a day Wednesday on her way to St. Mary's College, Raleigh. The people should patronize the merchants that invite your trade. Why do you expect people to come to Hickory and spend their money when you do not invite them? The Civic League has a big work to do in our city. Every body in Hickory should be a member and lend them their full support. We hope how soon they may get to action. • T. A. Salvo has returned from a two months trip to Virginia and reports business good. Mrs. Salvo has moved into the Mrs. John Robinson residence on 13th street and is keeping boarders. .. The Times-Mercury is now having half of their paper print ed in' Statesville which is quite an improvement. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Guernsey, Mr. and Mrs. Branson Ingold and little son, left Tuesday for their home in Elsie, Neb. They were accompanied by little Miss Essie Hoke. We are always glad to have these.good people come among us. The entire railroad Commis sion was here Tuesday and prom ised that the railroad pass way in rear of postoffice would be finish ed right away. They are also talking about a new passenger depot, or at least they agree that we need a new one. Mr. A. J. Fraley, of High Point, now has charge of the new Carolina Hotel. This hotel has been ntted up with every thing new and all the modern conveniences. Mr. Fraley is an experienced hotel man and knows how to entertain his guests. L. E. Boytin of the U. S. De partment of Agriculture will speak in the Acadamy of Music, on Thursday night, Oct. 14. All the farmers ought to hear him. There will also be other promi nent speakers on the same sub ject. Don't fail to hear them. . The Henkel Live Stock Com pany have bought the stable property now occupied bv the Aiken Livery Stable. They have also bought the brick house used as sample rooms of Mr. Laugh ran, and have contracted with Mr. Starens of Charlotte to roll it down to, or near the stables. Presbyterian Church Notes. Regular services next Sunday morning and night. The Men's class will meni as usual in the church parlor at the Sunday school hour. The sub ject is "Aaron's sin and conse c -ation." All the men who have special topics will please be on hand to report. The subject of the Boys' Bri gade at 3 o'clock after noon will b*e "how to help our Pastor." Ail the bo>s are urged | to be present. The Bulletin will be of special interest next Sunday. Be sure to get one. The Ladies Missionary Society is holding a week of prayer this week in the church. The Teachers Training class renews its word next week. Also a teachers meeting will be inau gurated at the same time. Children Cry FOR FLETCHER'S CASTO R I A Hickory's Street Fair. At a meeting held at the Hick ory Club rooms last night ar rangements were perfected for the holding of the Catawba Coun ty Street Fair here on the 15 of October. The Superintendants of the various departments were placed in charge of the collection of all donations and the distribu tion of the prizes. It was decid ed to hold a meeting Saturday afternoon at the Academy of Music where it is desired that all the superintendents, ladies in cluded, be present. Those who have subscribed to the premium fund are requested to have their donations readv when the com mittee calls for them. Great interest is being mani fested in the fair and it is hoped that the undertaking will be em inently successfully. On Thurs- j day night before the fair Mr. Lr E. Boyden of the United States Department of Agriculture will deliver a good roads lecture in the Academy of Music at 8 p. m. Moody lias just been invited to preach to the students at Chapel Hill, and may accept later in the month. Two offers of work in the Dio cese of Florida have come to the Rev.
