CHARGE AGAINST ELDER One of the things to come be fore the Conference in session here was the trial of R°iv. C. F. Sherrill, a presiding elder of the church for alleged im proper remarks on his part tc one Mrs. Cherry of Rutherford ton. She alleged that he actec improperly and put his arm: around her while escorting her home from a social affair a* Rutherford College. We are personally acquainted Mr. Sher rill and know him to be a gentle men of the first water. It is indeed sad to have a man of his rank brought to charge for an offense of this nature, but the Methodist Church is very partic ular about the conduct of its min isters and under the circumstan ces it would have been wrong to ignore the matter. The commit tee considered the matter delib erately and prayerfully and dis posed of it according to their judgment, finding him guilty of improper conduct and suspend ing him 30 days. We are glad to see that a place has been re served for him and that he will take up his ministerial work again. We hope there will be no criticism of the judgment of the committee. . FOOTBALL. Since several deaths have oc curred recently on the football field the press has had much to say regarding its abolition or its reform. And more powerful than anything else is the public opinion that has been aroused and expressed on the matter. Public opinion is the most pow erful agency in the world, and it seems now as if the game must be modified or Congress will take the matter in hand at its next meeting and probably enact a law similar to the one Commis sioner Macfarland proposes to offer in the District of Columbia, placing it in the same category with prizefighting and making it illegal. That the element of danger should be removed is cer tain. What a brutal thing it is for lives to be sacrificed and homes brought to grief simply for the sake of an exciting pleas ure. Perhaps ten or more lives have been lost in the game this season and bodies have been crippled fcr life. We love athletic sports because they teach manhood and grow strong bodies, but there is a limit. Football has passed this limit in its present form and it is time some steps should be taken for a change. Let us keep the game but at the same time have rules that will alienate the dan ger element. There is no way of improving a place so much as by encourag ing good merchants, good schools and good people to settle among you, and this can not be done un less you spend your money at home. \ That spirit of building good roads will come on the people in a short time so absorbing that nothing can stop it and a move ment will be launched to macad amize the principal roads in the county. A seed was sown when Hickory voted $35,000 for the improvement of her streets and this is only the beginning of the great future. Train your eyes to rest on the brightest spots in life. Pass the darkness on the other side. One of the sunniest places on earth is the spot made sacred by the hal lowed influenced of those we love in our own homes. You don't have to go to war to be patriotic. Improve your lo cality, uphold your town, enlarge its interests, and lend a hand to progress and you are a patriot— all lover of your country—as truly as the soldier who shoulders his musket.—Madison County Re cord. A traveling man was heard to remark this week that Hickory has the finest climate to be found anywhere. Of course he is right. It is a fine place to live and is the radiating point of the . earth. As one said "go any direction /oil wish and travel 8,000 miles and you will come back to Hick ory." Speaking of the Conference and Hickory, The Greensboro News has the following: "A body of such able and godly men as compose this conference can but prove a blessing to the state country at large, and the eyas of the whole state are turned to the beautiful little City of hickory, where the sessions are being held." This paper is devoted to the upbuilding of this town, county md section and in every commu nity in the county we want live correspondents to send in- the news each week. We will ap preciate any items sent in and consider it a reflection of your interest in the growth of the county. Send us the news. You are anxious to know what is go ing on in every other section so help us in the publication of things interesting to the citizens. 25 Buildings Burued. Warrenton, Va., Nov. 23. — Ruin and desolation mark the burned district this rtjorning, following last night's disastrous conflagration. A driving rain storm helped to extinguish the smolcering fires. Business is at a standstill. The loss wili approximate SIOO. 000. The insurance is about $60,000. Twenty-five buildings, i 15 being residences were destroy-; ed. The town hall is being used as a storage place for what proper ty was saved. Only the prompt use of dyna mite prevented a much greater loss. Oxford Ford Items. J. W. Yount has received an appointment from the U. S. Government, Bureau of Animal Industry, and ordered to report for duty at the stock yards in Toledo, Ohio. Nov. 22nd. His wife will supervise the selling of their things and follow in the course of a week. It is hoped that they will like their new home in Tole do. Mr, Charles Hedrick will move into the house of Mr. J. W. Yount. We are sorry to learn that Mr. B. E Houston has typhoid fever instead of malaria. We trust that careful nursing will hasten the return of his former good health. Mrs. Lottie Rockett leaves this week for her home in Greens boro. Her many friends enjoyed her visit and hope she will not forget her Catawba friends. We hear of a proposed trip to Chase City, Va. Messrs. Q. M. Smith and Noah Yount will de cide the matter of purchasing a farm in that vicinity. There are persistent rumors of five or six holiday weddings. It is yet too early to mention names, and besides, the parties directly concerned may change their minds. Wait and see. The last game of football to be played in this county this season will be pulled off Thanksgiving between Lenoir and Catawba Colleges on the Catawba field. The teams are about evenly matched and a good game is ex pected. This is the annual game and the hour for the first kickoff is 3:30. It is hoped a large crowd will attend and root for the col leges. In order to make this the best paper in this section of the state, we want correspondents to send in the news from every commu nity in the county. Write or call in the office for the offer we have to make. Lenoir Wins. Lenoir College won in the foot ball game here Saturday with the D. & D. Institute of Morgan ton by the score of 17 to 6. The halves were 25 m nutes each and the struggle was one of the fierc est ever seen between two foot ball elevens. In the first half Lenoir had her way, scoring two touchdowns and kicking goals both times, but in the second half the D. & D. boys got down to hard fighting and succeeded in scoring a touch down and a goal kick. There is nothing better that we know of, for all kidney ailments, than Pin eules. These pills are really excellent in any case of kidney trouble. For weak back or backache, rheumatic troubles, etc., they are unequalled. Sold by W. S. Martin. Off to Oklahoma. Messrs. E. L. Shuford, John W. Blackwelder, ex-sherriff of this county, Bascom Blackwelder, teller in the Hickory Banking arid Trust Company, Walter S. Martin, druggist, and Zeb Buch anan, real estate dealer, left Tuesday night for Lawton, Okla., to be gone several days. Mr. Shuford goes to make ar rangements for the building of a new cotton mill which he is in terested in there with others. This mill will be one of the most modern in that section and repre sents an expenditure of about $500,000. Mr. Shuford will be away about a month, after which he will return to Hickory for a short stay. The other gentlemen named in' the party go on a prospecting trip to look over the country and see the general conditions of business, farming, real estate and other things. It is hoped that these gentlemen will not be induced to leave this town for they are among the most valued citizens. MOI I IftTPR'Q Rocky Mountain Tea Nuggefs A Busy Medicine for Bury People.
