We are told that the water in | the Catawba river is so low that it can be at some places waded and at many places it can be crossed by stepping on the pro jecting rocks. Many wells are going dry and small streams are on the verge of drying up. Mr. Bud Yount tells us that he was out about Lookout Shoals last week buying cattle- He stopped at a farm house to water his horse at a well, but was told that water was so low it could not be spared. Mr. D, P. Hall man. of Caldwell fell from his barn loft and injured his liver. He was taken to Statesville to day in a serious condition. Local News. Mrs. H. L. Norfleet, two chil dren and maid, of Havana, Cuba, who spent the summer here two years ago, are visiting at Rev. J. D. Harte's Messrs. S. E. Young, of Char lotte, and Dr. J. A. Young of Newton, have bought out the Pope Grocery Co. there and Capt. J. W. Pope will resume his old place with the C. and N. W. R. R. Miss Marjorie Whitener, who has been visiting in Washington, and Culpeper, Va. t for 6 weeks, has re turned home, and had a fine time. With her returned Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Sampsell of Washington, who are guests at her home. Rev. Dr. L. A. Fox of Salem, Va., arrived yesterday to visit his sister, Mrs. J. W. Killian and Mrs. S. L. Yount. He had been attending the Lutheran normal at' Hickory. His daughter Mrs. C. K. Bell of Kings Mountain, and Miss Elizabeth Tuibyfield of the county, are also gutsts at Mrs. Killian.—Newton News. Mr. J. C. Lyons gives up his position as butter maker at the Creamery this week to accept management of the 200-acre Blair Dairy farm at High Point, owned by Messrs. John and Dave Blair. They expect to increase their herds from 26 to 100. Mr. Lyons is succeeded here as but ter-maker by Mr. J. C. Hayes, of Kansas, whom the Democrat welcomes to Hickory.
