Our people are aware that there is a project on foot to erect a memorial to Dr. Robert A. Yoder in the form of a Science Building on the campus at Lenoir College at Hickory, to cost when equipped and completed $15,000. Not only should the people of the Lutheran Church be interest ed in the erection of this memo rial, but all the people of this county in particular, and citizens of this .Piedmont Carolina in general, for the service of Dr. Yoder has benefitted practically every enterprise now prospering in this section. He trained and educated a whole generation of leaders in the forward move ments of this section, not only in the ministry, but leaders in agri culture, law, business enterprises, school teaching, etc. He not only established the High School in the St. James community and the Colleges at Conover and at Hickory in the service of which he was engaged for more than nineteen years; he was also county superintend ent of public instruction for sev eral terms, and gave Catawba county the only map which is officially used. In this school work wisely con ceived and planded by Dr. Yoder, more than 3,000 students have shared and have received help for a useful life. These students have gone forth in the world and made money, for many of them have the luxuries of life, whilt Dr. Yoder was never able to possess them. For air this ser vice he receiyed a meagre salary, never receiving more than a bare living, as his administrators car testify. Surely then our people will not be ungrateful of the services ol this man who, though born in another county, gave all his life work in the school room in this county. The citizens of Cataw ba should rally to this cause and contribute not less than $5,00( for this purpose. Our people are now having the priyilege of doing something tt express their appreciation of the man, for canvassers are in each community now for this very purpose. In Hickory, Rev. C. L. Miller and Judge Lester D. Russell; in Newton, Rev. B. L. Stroup and Mr. C. E. Smyre, and in Maiden, Rev. J. L. Cromer. There are some fifteen othei persons canva-sing the Lutheran territory in North and South Carolina and Virgina. The canvass is to be finished not later than the 10th of Sep tember and the friends shoulc rally quickly to the support oJ the work. Surely so generous a benefact or of this section should receive a worthy treatment to mark hi? worth; surely the citizens of Catawba county should give net less than $5,000 toward the erec tion of this memorial. WOMEN 'S WOES. Hickory Women Are Finding Relief at Last. Subscribe to The Democrat, Watch Hickory Grow. Despite of the growth and the cry of hard times, Hickory was never on such a financial boom as now. In the last >ear, many handsome residences have been built. Several are now being built and others are being plan ned. Real estate has not only ad vanced in price, but is a ready sale for cash. In the last thirty davs, real estate to the value o1 $75,000 has changed hands, most of it being bought by new com ers. And it was cash, too. In this respect, we are just in the beginning. Not only thi3, but capital—large capital—is headed this way. Ii is believed that in the near fu ture, at least a half a dozen new and large manufacturing plants will be installed here, amounting to over a half a million dollars. The city is holding out great in ducements, and is ready and willing to meet any worthy en terprise half way. A committee is off now visiting a proposed plant. Our people are contented here. Everyone is for Hickory. It is safely estimated that Hickory will double her population in the next ten years. We will soon have a new post Office building and a new depot as good as any town. We have the climate, water, schools, colleges anc churches that are attracting hundreds of home-seekers far anc near. C. thousands Hate Kidney Trouble and Never Suspect it How To Find Out. Lesson Xl.— Third Quarter, For Sept. 10, 1911. THE INTERNATIONAL SERIES. Text of the Lesson, Dan. i, 8-20—Mem ory Verses, 8. 9—Golden Text, Rom xiv, 21— Commentary Prepared by Rev. D. M. Stearns. The study of prophecy should be t( every child of God most fascinatinglj attractive, for "to Him give all tin prophets witness." and "the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy" (Act x, 43: Rev. xix. 10). The Lord ln told the prophets all that He intend to do. and prophecy is therefore : light In a dark place to show us th way we are going (Amos iii. 7; II Pei 1, 19-21) Our blessed Lord is Jus the same as when on the way to Em maiks, and the same evening in thi midst of the disciples He opened t> them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself (Luke xxiv, 23-27 44-4 C). and He still loves to do so In one of His discourses He men tioned the prophet Daniel, and tb- prophet Ezekiel also mentions him by same (Matt, xxiv, 15; Ezek. xlv, 14) Eseklel and Daniel were both among the captives in Babylon for their good and the good of others (Jer. xxiv, 4-7) They were the Lord's messengers, and ID them was seen the wisdom and power of the true and living God as contrasted with the wisdom of this world. I find it helpful to my own •oul to watch God working and to re member that He is as ready now t( work for His glory In those who an wholly His as were Daniel and hi? friends. Notice In verses 2, 9. 17, of our les ■on chapter that it was the Lord wh gave the king of Judah into the band> of the king of Babylon. He als brought Daniel Into favor with tin prince of the ennuchs and gave to hln. and his friends knowledge and skill lr> all learning and wisdom. "Whatso ever the Lord pleased that did He.' "Se doeth according to His will in th army of heaven and among the inhab ltants of the earth." "He worketb all things after the counsel of His owr will" (Ps. cxxxv. G: Eph. 1, lis. These young men were chosen t( stand before the king of Babyloi. (verse 5), but they never forgot that they always stood before a much greater King, even the Lord, the Kin? of Israel (Zeph. iii. lot. Their beauti ful names signifying God is my judge Jehovah is gracious, who is as God Is. Jehovah my keeper, might be covered by idolatrous names, but what men might call them did not affect theii standing before God. Even In the matter of eating and drinking we are to glorify God and not be conformed to the age in which we live (I Cor. x. 31; Rom. xil, 1, 2). so Daniel purposed In his heart that he would not detile himself with food offered to idols (verse 8). In thi.- matter God wrought for them, not only giving them favor with those set over them, but also causing them to thrive better on their plain food than did the others who ate the portion of the king's meat (verses 9, 14, 15). It Is not so much the food we eat either as to quantity or quality, as tbr blessing of God upou it On one oc casion our Lord taught that "not thai which goeth into the mouth defileth f man," and so Paul wrote, "1 know and am persuaded by the Lord that there is nothing unclean of itself" (Mntt. xv, 11; Itom. xlv, 14). Ordinarl ly we are to eat what is set before us. asking no questions, but in DanielV case it was a matter of sanctioning idolatry or standing for the true God and when with us under any circum stances it becomes a question of God or the devil there is only one thing to do. We cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons (I Cor x, 21). We are not to imagine that God gave them knowledge and skill In all learn ing and wisdoin (verse 17) apart from study on their part, whether It was the wisdom of Egypt or the wisdom from above, which is first pure, then peaceable, gentle and easy to be en treated (Jas. ill, 17). Some of us can llmoßt Imagine with what relief and Joy they would turn from the books of Egypt to the book of the law of the Lord and how there would be fulfilled to them, "Blessed are they that hun ger and thirst iKter righteousness, for they shall be filled." The natural man can grasp the wisdom of this world, but the things of God knoweth no man, but the spirit of God. In his un derstanding of visions and dreams also he would doubtless profit by the ex perlence of Joseph and the ability giv en to him and to others. With what sublime confidence In God he said to the king In connection with his first dream that If time was granted to him he would show the in terpretation and how gloriously God honored his faith by revealing to him the secret In a vision of the night (chapter 11, 10-19). See in chapter ii, 28, 29, 47, how he honored God, who revealed to him the secret, and how because of this the king honored God also as the God of gods and a Lord c f kings. So God was glorified In Daniel "And Daniel continued" (verse 21). There Is a most profitable meditation In those words, and we are reminded of Acts xxvl, 22, "Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day." Paul believed Moses and the prophets Just as Daniel did, and in Dan. lx, 2, he tells ns that he had been studying the word of the Lord by Jeremiah, the prophet. "Generally debilitated for years.
