"This was one* of the most enjoyable events yet given bv Hickory's fire ladies. All of our boys were present and every one enjoyed the event immensely. The affair was strictly informal but this fact detracted nothing from the pleasure of the occas ion. Chief C. A, Moser was toastmaster and added much to the humor of the evening. Gov, Kitchin has pardoned John H. Rader, convicted of burning the mill at Newton, and for his action he gives the fol lowing reasons: "The protest therefore filed has been with drawn and in its stead the main protestant recommends pardon. The trial judge, the acting so licitor, and the commissioner of insurance, who prosecuted the case, all recommend pardon. Prisoner's record has been good during his thirteen months' ser vice. He is weak mentally. Those who recommend think that he has now been punished sufficiently for his offense. Par don on conditions that he re main law-abiding and of good behavior. Mrs. A. M. West found a very large pearl in an oyster on Christ mas eve. The oyster had been fried, but not fried to hurt, it is hoped.
