We wish to thank the good people of our town for the many ! nice packages which they gave j us on Thursday night before Christmas for the needy. Though the night was cold and rainy, we gathered up four wagon loads of good things, such as clothing, groceries, etc., and quite a num ber of families were made glad by the receipt of valuable boxes on Saturday before Christmas. We have clothed a number of children who have spent the; winter without shoes or proper clothing, we have given cash do nations ranging from one to fivf dollars each to widows, and or pharife and sick people, and we 1 still have enough clothing to: cloth several dozen men. women and children, which we will give out as we find it needed. We also wish to thank Mr. Stone of the Gaiety Theatre, for , his kindness in giving to us the proceeds from his show on Fri-: day night before Christmas. This was by far the largest single gift which we received, and we can assure Mr. Stone that several humble heartstones in our town will be kept warm and bright! during the cold winter days and night because of his generosity, i Again we thank you, and wish for you a happy and prosperous year. Memory Verses, 76, 77—Golden Text, Luke i, 6S—Commentary Prepared by Rev. D. M. Stearns. , Will some one tell why tbe visit of Gabriel to Mary, with the most won derful announcement ever made to any mortal, is wholly omitted, and the Christinas lesson of Dec. 24 again as signed for Feb. 4? It is not ours to reason why, but simply to pray, Lord talk with us by the way and open to us tbe Scriptures. May each one no tice and firmly believe the assurance of the supernatural birth and Mary's acceptance of it, perhaps little dream ing the cost to herself of such an hon or (verses 35. 38). Then notice the plain and simple prediction concern ing the throne of David and the com ing kingdom (verses 30-33 i. See Eliza beth and Zacbarlas filled with the Holy Spirit and note all their words (verses 41, 67). Observe carefully the R. V. of verse 37, "No word from God shall be void of power." 1 have In my mind associated with this Isa. lv, 11. "It shall not return unto nie void* but it shall accomplish that which I please." When Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, said. "Blessed is she that believed, for there shall be a per formance of those things which were told her from the Lord" (verse 45). then Mary burst forth with, 4 My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour," clos ing with, "As He spake to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever.' Many of Mary's utterances remind us of Hannah's prayer or song in I Sam. il, 1-10, closing with. "He shall give strength unto His King and exalt the bora of His anointed." This Is the first reference to Christ as the Messiah or anointed one. Compare John i, 41 The son of Elizabeth being born at the full time and the eighth day. or time for cifcumctsion, having come, there was a little perplexity about a name for the boy, as some would have him called by his father's name, but his mother said, "He shall be called John.' * They made signs to his father, who, to the surprise of all. wrote, "nis name is John" (verses 57-03). See verse 13 and find the other six who were called by name before they were born, two of them several hundred years before, or ;it least one. Notice the release of Zacharias from his affliction which came upon him be cause of unbelief. Faith in Jesus Christ, the reception of Him as one's personal Saviour, not only delivers from the wrath to come, but delivers from all bondage. The truth shall make you free. If the Son shall make you free ye shall be free indeed (John vlll. 32, 36). The hand of the Lord upon the child reminds us that he was to be filled with the Spirit from his b'rth (verses 15. CO), and the two say ings make us think of Ezek. iii, 14: vlll. 3. This Is your need and mine, dear reader, the hand of the Lord upon us and the Holy Spirit filling and •-•ontrolling. From verse 07 to the last verse of the chapter we have tbe say ings of Spirit filled Zacharias, telling us of the kingdom which would have come had the people been willing to receive John and Jesus and the king dom, but which, because of their re jection of all, is still in abeyance, wait ing for the King to come again in glory to set up His kingdom of peace and righteousness. He bad spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets in all the Old Testament Scriptures con cerning a kingdom to include all na tions, with Israel a redeemed people at the center (verses 08-75: Ps. lxxii. 11, 18; lxvil, 1-7; Isa. ii, 1-4; lx. 1-22. and everywhere). The prophets told, how ever, of a Messiah who would be de spised and rejected and be cut off and have nothing as well as a Messiah who as son of David would sit on David's throne (Isa. liii; Dan. vii, 13, 14; ix, 2G margin), but they did not tell of the long Interval of this present age between the sufferings and the glory, when during the postponement of the kingdom and the scattering of Israel He will gather out by the gospel a people to share His glory and reign with Him when the kingdom comes. This was reserved to be communicated to Paul and through him to us. See Rom. xvl, 25-27: xi, 25-27; Eph. iii. Concerning the postponement of the kingdom until His return see Luke xlx. 11-13: Acts iii, 20. 21. and notice the joyful worship of the disciples when they understood that He would come again In due time to fulfill all the prophecies concerning His kingdom (Luke xxlv, 25-27, 44-53). The words of Zacharias and of all the prophets shall be as literally fulfilled as were all the predictions concerning His birth and humiliation, and the time draws ever nearer. Meantime while we wait for the literal fulfillment on Israel we may find in our lives, as His redeemed ones by His precious blood, many a fulfillment and manifestation of these precious words. If we are in Christ we are delivered from the wrath to come and are the seed of Abraham and joint heirs with Him of the whole world (I. Thess. i, 10: Rom. iv, 13: vlll, 17; GaL iii. 29). Whether salva tion be Individual or national, it must be through the house of David and the King of the Jews, for salvation is of the Jews, and there is none other (John lv, 22; Acts lv, 12). If we are His re deemed ones, waiting for the kingdom, we may by His grace serve Him with out fear in holiness and righteousness.
