The recent forestry convention Sn Raleigh did some good work. A warning of the chestnut tree blight, a fungus disease which has I infected timber'all the way from New England to West Vir ginia, was given. A bill in Con gress appropriating $BO,OOO toj fight the disease, should be sup ported. The convention endorsed the introduction into our schools and colleges of elementary courses in forestry, which will give the children of the State a better ap preciation of the worth of these most valuable natural resources; and heartliy endorsed the efforts of the North Carolia Geological and Economic Survey to make general the observance of Arbor Day in our public schools, and requested the State Board of Education to require the same. An important resolution was the following: Whereas, the annual yield from the forests of this State is ex ceeded only by the yield of cot ton and corn; and, Whereas, the forests are being cut at a much faster rate than they are producing timber, which will increase the demand for our second-growth forests year by year; and, Whereas, forest fires not only destroy large amounts of mer chantable timber, but also im mense areas of young growth which ought to be reserved for the future use of our citizens: therefore be it Resolved, that the North Caro lina Forestry Association advo cate a State system of fire pro tection supported by an appro priation of the Legislature, to be administered by a technecial and non-partisan organization for the protection of all the timber lands of the State. The Democrat hopes our peo ple will arouse themselves to the importance of scientific forestry. TWO GOOD BILLS. The generally good record of the Democratic majority in the House has been enhanced by the decision of the Democratic cau cus to place sugar on the free list. The cane sugar raisers of Louisiana and the sugar beet growers of the West are howling, of course, but the interest? of the majority of the people de mand a reduction of the duty, It will decrease the revenue by $53,000,000 a year, but to make up this loss Chairman Under wood of 'the Ways and Means committee proposes to extend the corporation tax to individuals and partnerships with an annual income of over *5,000. This is equiyalent to an income tax and it gets around the Supreme's Court's decision declaring the in come tax unconstitutional. Both bills are in the interest of the people. WOULDN TGO TO HELL WITH SETTLE, It looks as if the Republicans are going to run Tom Settle on a local option platform. The hope is to gain enough Demo crats over to open the prohibition question again. Mr. Settle is a brilliant speaker and would make inroads in the Democratic party but not enough to offset losses to himself from Republican prohibi tionists like Judge Pritchard and Col. Lusk, of Asheville, There are lots of Republicans who will re echo of Judge Robinson of Golds boro, who said at the banquet: "lam willing to follow my party until it says for me to sro to hell." —— i Now is the time to spray. 1 Every'farmer who has an or chard should spray. Judge Cline's Popularity. Windsor Ledger. Hon. E. B. Cline who held our court last week is one of the State's best judges. He is in the very prime of life. At his home Hickory he is held in high es teem. His conduct of our court was satisfactory to our people, and we found him an agreeable gentleman and a progressive of ficer. They will be glad to know that he will hold our May court when the two weeks work should and probably will clear off our docket. 5 A FAIR OFFER Your Money Back if You're > not Satisfied We pay for all the medicine used during the trial, if our remedy fails to completely relieve you of constipation. Hair is certainly most necessary to a " woman. Who could love and many a ball-headed woman? What chfrms n- could one array to offset such a dis is figurement? A woman's goal is usually love and marriage. Her crowning glory is her hair. The loss of hair mars her ' beauty, happiness, and success. Yet, right here in Hickory, there are thou sands of women who are neglecting or If? injuring their hair to such an extent h- that it is only a matter of time when it or will be utterly ruined. Many women destroy the beauty of their hair through thoughtlessness or ignorance of certain facts. They use curling irons over-heated, or to excess which destroys the natural oil of the hair, causing it to split, break, and 10 come out. They do not shampoo their V. I hair often enough, or too often. They S- j use soaps or preparations which contain id; ingredients positively harmful to the j scalp and hair, b-; ' As a result of such treatment, dan "k druff is created, the hair loosens, looses ; color, falls Out, and baldness commen [_ ces, unless proper and prompt precau tions are taken Jn time. Then again, 10 microbes and certain diseases bring r\ about unhealthy scalp an j hair con ditions. g Almost any woman may rid herself B> of dandruff and diseased scalp and hair jj if she will but use the right remedy. | 3 _ We have that remedy, and we will | positively guarantee that it will either cure dandruff and baldness or it will 13 not cost the user anything. Text Of the Lesson, Mark li, 1-12. Memory Verses, J-11—Golden Text, Ps. ciii, 2, 3 —Commentary Prepared by Rev. D. M. Stearns. After the healing of the leper great multitudes came together to hear Him and to be healed by Him of their in firmities. We can hardly imagine the innumerable happy homes, because where once sickness and- suffering ruled now all is health and peace be cause of Him who. being anointed with the Holy Ghost and with power, went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, God being with Him (Acts x, 38). See in this verse, as in so many others, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, all for us, and compare Rom. Till, 26,31-34. In Luke v, 16, we read that He withdrew Himself into the wilderness and pray ed. There was always a conscious oneness with the Father which we do not experience, because He always in all things pleased the Father (John viii, 29; Matt xvii, 5). The healing of today's lesson Is recorded In Matt ix and Luke Y, as well as in Mark. Having returned to Capernaum, the people soon found it out, and such crowds gathered as to prevent all ac cess to the house in any ordinary way. Pharisees and doctors of the law from Galilee, Judea and Jerusalem had gathered to hear Him, and He preach ed the word unto them, and the power of the Lord was present to heal them (verse 2; Luke v, 17). But in their own estimation they needed no heal ing. for they did not know that with all their learning they were wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked (Rev. 111, 17). The religious god of this world, the devil, had blinded their minds lest the ll b ht should shine unto them (II Cor. IT, A). What a con trast to their proud self sufficiency and indifference to the welfaie 6t others is seen in these four men who brought I their palsied friend to Jesus, no doubt fully persuaded that if they could only reach Him with the sick one the.v would not need to carry him away, for he would certainly be healed. 1 have met people who were afraid that they had not come to Jesus in the right way, but did ever any one come to Him in so strange a way as this? 1 have often wondered what the Phari sees aud doctors thought of having the roof broken up over their heads, yet we cannot help laughing within us, no matter how they might scowl, for the friends succeeded in getting him "into the midst before Jesus" (Luke v, 19). In each of the three accounts It Is written that Jesus saw their faith, the faith of the four who brought him. So in Matt, viil, 10; xv, 28; John lv, 50. it was the faith of another that brought health to the servant, the daughter and the son. May the words to Ps. xx, 4. 5, "Grant thee according to thine own heart and fulfill all thy counsel. * * * all thy petitions,' strengthen some to lay hold upon God for others. In Matt, ix, 2. we have the first "Be of good cheer" from the lips of the Lord. See other four in Matt ix. 22; xiv, 27; John xvi. 33; Acts xxlil. 11. The four words are in the Greek, just one word of six letters, but what a word, and from Him who alone is able really to cheer or comfort us. Then hear what follows, "Thy sins are forgiven thee." This is what th" man needed more than health for his body. I heard it for my own soul in the sum mer of 1873 from I John il, 12, with John 1, 12. Have you heard Him say it to you? If not, why? Theft can be no real comfort without it The scribes and Pharisees began to reason in their hearts: "This man is a blas phemer. Who can forgive sins but God only?" If they bad thought, "This must be God come down to earth, for only God can forgive sins," they would have been correct but to them He was only a map, a man of the common people and a blasphemer. Knowing their thoughts. He read them aloud to them, and we might suppose that this would have led them to,see in Him more than a mere man, but they were thoroughly blinded by the god of this world. Then, announcing Himself as the Son of pran having power on earth to forgive sins, He said to the sick map, ''Arise *pd take up thy bed and go thy way ipto thine house." Immediately he did as he was bidden, and they were all amazed and glorified God, saying. "We never saw it In this fashion," "We have seen strange things today" (verse 12; Luke v, 20). We may imagine the four friends rejoicing greatly and saying to others that is what we expected. Are we giving the Lord cause to say to us, "O ye of little faith," or, "Great is thy faith, be It unto thee even as thou wilt." His calling Himself "Son of Man" might have led them to think of Ps. viii and of one who was to have all things subdued unto Him, or of Dan. vii, 13, 14, and of one whose dominion would be an everlasting dominion never to be destroyed. If we have our sins forgiven we will In due time have perfect bodies like His resurrection body (Phil. ill. 20. 21), so that we con well afford to rejoice while In these mortal bodies, whether in tyealth or sickness, waiting for the resurrection body. All miracles may be called acted parables, aud in this palsied .man we may see the utter helplessness of the sinner to do any thing for himself, but Jesus is.stlll the same compassionate one pnd ready to forgive sins by virtue of His great 1 sacrifice for the sins of the world. 1 Children are much more likely to contract the contagious diseases when they have colds.
