A resolution was adopted by the Catawba county Democratic committee at Newton Monday to the effect that the ruling of the ktate committee, defining what luc woru JL/emocratic ticket means, was too drastic and would hurt the Democratic ticket in this county, and should therefore be modified. The committee feit that if the fight on the senator ship be kept within bounds the county ticket is safe all the waj through. Starnes is bu ( an addition to his residence near the school building. 1 Ivey Dots. Hickory. Oct. 7 —Several i changes have been made in the way of overseers at the Ivev Mill the last few days J. P. Downum resigned his position as card room boss and moved to Lincolton to take a like job in a mill there. And G. T. Barger has taken his place here. Capt C. E. Cole also resigned his place as overseer of weaving and moved to Hickory and J. F. Free man frcm Henrietta has taken his placa. While we are sorry to loose Mr. Downum and Mr. Cole we are glad the company have employed good men to take their places. Jones Lowman who has been it Alta Vista, Va., for several nonths came home Saturday. W. T. Cline from Plateau was here last week visiting the fami ies of Asa Hoover and T. J. Leonard. v Mexican Joe's show exhibited lere Friday and Saturday nichts. The Graded school of West flickory started up Mondav morn ng. Sept, 30. with Prof. M. L. Sherrill as principal and Miss Johnson and Miss Insley assist ints. A large number of pupils were enrolled the first morning ind the work started off in fine shape. J. C. Gabbers has been ap pointed chief of police for West Hickory to fill the unexpired term of W. L. Church, who re signed a few weeks ago, and Mr. Church has now taken work in P. K. Baker's store, helping to sell goods. A. C. Austin from Caldwell was here Saturdav and Sunday visiting his son, W. P. Austin. W. L. Walker spent Saturday and Sunday at Catawba station visiting relatives and friends. . lOTA Breezes From Across the River. Mr. J. W. Gaither, of Dayton, Va., is visiting his daughter, Mrs. A. L. Bolick. Rev, Messrs. Kennedy and Patton are conducting a meeting n Pisgah church this week. Hon. Mr. Daughton addressed the citizens of Alexander county >n the political issues Tuesday light at the Teague school louse. Mr. Gaither Bolick, son of Rev. A. L. Bolick, who has spent the last two years in Texas, gave is quite a surprise on last Fri lay by hringing to his fathers home a brand new wife. He left Galveston, Tex., last Tuesday, reaching Lexington Thursday, where he was united in marriage with Miss Blanch Hyatt., of Davidson, N. C. The bride and Erroom will leave Lexington next Thursday for Galveston, where the erroom holds the position as book-keeper and stenographer in the office of the Santa Fe Rail road.
