Carolina.
Mrs, G. N. Hutton and boys
left Monday evening for N. Y.
to meet Mr. Hutton, who with
Mr. Fred M. Winters has been
spending the holidays with Mr.
Winters parents in Germany.
Mr. John Murphy and wife,
of Asheboro, are home on a
visit during his father's illness.
Mr. Murphy was quietly manied
to Miss Corra Connor, of Henri
etta, soon after the new year. Hia
marriage was a surprise to his
many friends here who wish
him and his wife a long and
happy life.
A reply has been filed in Su
perior court by the Amer ic a n
National bank to the answer of
J. A. Martin, in which the bank
8 suing Mr. Martin on certain
notes. The defendant in his
answer had set up a counter
claim of $50,000 for a breach of
contract or agreement alleged to
have been made with J. H. Car
ter while he was president of
the bank. In the reply it is con
tended that Mr. Carter's author
ity was limited and he had not
the power to make the agree
ment which the defendant con
tends was made,—Asheville

the old duty on monazite.

by shutting down of the mines.
