Lesson ll.—Fourth Quarter, For
Oct. 12, TSI3.
THE INTERNATIONAL SERIES.
Text of the Lesson, Num. xii— Memory
Verses, 10, 11— Golden Text, ! Ccr.
xiii, 4, s—Commentary Prepared by
Rev. D. M. Steams.
Ihe first verse of this lesson men
tions the three ehiidren of fuis re
nowned family of Amram and .loche
bed of the tribe of Levi of the family
of Kohath (Ex. vi. tU-20i. They are
mentioned again in .Num. xxvi. 57-SU.
Moses was eighty years old. and Aaron
was eighty-three when they spake
unto Pharaoh that lie should lot Israel
go that they might serve the Lord.
Miriam must have been the oldest,
for when Moses was three months old
*he was old enough to watch what
wight happen to the babe in the ark
•f bulrushes, to suggest to Pharaoh's
daughter a nurse for the babe and to
bring her mother as thy u rise. Tin
tribe of Levi was chosen by the Lord
instead of all the firstborn in Israel,
and they were given unto Aaron to
minister unto him.
They were to encamp about it. takt*
it down, carry it from place to place,
set it np and have all the care of it
They were not to be numbered with
the other tribes. They had no inher
itance iu the land, like the other
tribes, but only cities to live in. The
Lord Himself was their inheritance,
and they lived upon the tithes of tin
others and were to give to the Lord
the tenth part of the tithes they re
ceiyed (Num. i. 47-54: ii, 33; iii. *5-13:
x!, 51; vili. 5-20; xviii, 20-2(5; xxxv. 1-S).
The sous of Levi were Gershon ami
Kohath anrl Merari. Aniraui belonging
to * the Kohathites, whose special
charge was the holy vessels, while the
others carried the heavier parts, as
IK>Hrds. pillars, sockets, curtains. for
which wagons and oxen were provid
ed. while the vessels, properly covered,
were l>orne upon their shoulders (Num.
ii. 17. 27-87). Miriam is called a
prophetess, and she was honored in
leading the praises of the other women
(Ex. sv. 20. 211. Aaron was given to
Moses to be his spokesman or prophet.
While there might be complaining
and murmuring among others in Israel,
might we not expect to find in this
household the love of our Golden Text,
that is always kind? But. no. the
heart everywhere is deceitful and des
perately wicked, and the author of all
strife and confusion is ever busy.
It is always true that our adversary. '
the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh 1
about, seeking whom he may devour, i
aud we are not always careful to re- -
sist him (1 Pet. v. S. lb. Zipporah was i
neither the first nor the last woman |
spoken against in her own home or by
her relatives by marriage.
We think of Hannah, who suffered i ;
much from her adversary in her o.vn
home, who provoked her sore t > make
her fret (I Sam. i. C>>. but as Hannah's
resort was the one who hears prayer j |
(l's. Ixv. 2). so may He be the refuge ! S
of all tired ones. We might think that •!
respect for Moses, WIMIU the Lor.ljj
had so honored, would prevent his ;
brother and sisti-r from speaking (
against his wife, but 111ey spake even !
against him also, saying: "Hath the ■
Lord Indeed spoken only by Moses?
Hath He not spoken also by us?"
(verse 2).
Happy are those who can leave their
affairs to Ilirn to manage and roil oIT (
all the burden, casting ail the care ;
upon Him. for He careth. In this case '
at least Moses was very meek (verse ;
3). and that was evidently the manner
of his life. The prophet, like unto
Moses, said that we would find rest in
bearing the yoke of meekness and low
liness (Matt, xl, 2U).
The Lord heard their words (verse
2). and It should be a comfort to every
Child of God that He bears every word
spoken against us and sees every
thought.
One of the best things I know is that
He hears those who talk to one anoth
er about Him and keeps a book of re
membrance for all who even think
upon His name (Mai. ili. 16). In this
case we read that the Lord spake
suddenly. 7f that is the correct word,
the best translation, it may indicate
that these two were taken by surprise,
perhaps not considering that the Lord
was taking notice. Aaron evidently
forgetting that less than a year before
he had been commissioned to say to
Israel. "Come near before the Lord,
for He hath beard your murmurings"
(Ex. xvi. G-10).
The Lord said. "Come out. ye three"
(verse 4). for they were the only ones
concerned in this.
The three came forth, and the Lord
came down in the pillar of cloud and
talked with Aaron and Miriam con
cerning the honor He had put upon
Moses and asked why they were not
ufraid to speak against him (verses 5-8).
Compare Dent, xxxiv. 7. 10-12, con
cerning the way the Lord honored
Moses.'His servant.
See in Heb. Hi. 5, rt, Moses aud Christ
spoken of and the house of each, and
consider what might happen today to
those who do not hesitate to speak
against Christ, denying His Deity. His
supernatural birth. His resurrection
from the dead. His coming again In
glory, were God to deal with them as
He dealt with Miriam. As Miriam
was punished aud not Aaron, she must
'have been the leader in talkingagainsi
Moses because of his wife. Was it
Jealousy? Consider Moses" prayer for
his sister. "Heal her now. O God. I be
seech Thee!" (verse 13). She was
healed, but not instantly, as some
would have us think Is the only way.
