Geitner, Mr. and Mrs, G. S. Watson and Mrs. G. H. Geitner motored to Charlotte a few days ago. Miss Nanette Rudasill has re turned to her home in Lincoln ton, after a visit to Miss Mary Knox Henderson. Miss Charlotte Smith has gone to Hollins. Va. t where she will attend school this win ter. Miss Adelaide Johnson is spending a few days in • Lenoir with her aunt, Mrs. William Self. Mrs. Sallie Watson of Newton, (pent a few days in Hickory last week. Her many friends are always glad to welcome her -to our city. Mr. L. E. Zerden returned last week from the Northern ets where he purchased a nice line of goods for his fall and winter trade. Mr. George Kirkpatrick of Murphy, spent the week end with his mother, Mrs. Kirkpat rick. We are always glad to see George in Hickory. Miss Stanley Hall has returned from Spencer where she attend ed a meeting of the Epworth Lsague. She was made General Secretary. Mrs. Henry Elliott passed through this city a few days ago en route to her home in Catawba, after spending some- time at her summer home in Ridge Crest. Mrs. W. T, Hudson and small son. Colin, have returned to their home in Greenville, S. C., after spending the summer with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. C. A. Munro2, Messrs. J. S., R. L., and W. K. Mauney, L. A. Kiser, D. M. Baker and Dr. C. K. Bell, stop- Ded over in Hickory a short time yesterday en route to Boone. The 16-month-old child of Mr. and Mrs. Cam Burns was buried in Oakwood cemetery here Sun day, having died Saturday. Rev. J. L. Muroby, D. D„ conducted the services. Mrs. Wilson Starnes, who lives near Catawba Springs celebrated her 59th birthday Sundoy with a big dinner at which about 200 relatives and friends of Mrs. Starnes gathered together to do her honor. Mr. and Mrs. Lon Sherrill have moved to Newton. Mr. Sherrill has been there for some time, but has just succeeded in get ting a house. We regret to lose these good people from our city. Ms§ Laura Totten has returned home after spending some time with her cousin, Mrs. Lillie Ury Sherwood, at Murphy. Rev. Mr. Sherwood has accepted a call to the pastorate of a church at Bennettaville, S. C. Miss Mary Allen was hostess to the l)o-As-You-Please elab last Thursday afternoon. Only seven members were present. After a pleasant hour spent in sewing, sandwiches and tea were served by the hostess. Mr. J. Henry Hill has resign ed his position as traveling sales man and accepted a position with the Imperial Mutual Inurance Co. Mr. and Mrs. Hill will mpke their home with Mrs. Hil's mother, Mrs. S. F, Salvo. Mrs. W. B. Ramsay is in Mem phis, Tenn., this week attending the Women's Council of the Southern Presbyterian church. Mi's. Ramsay as president of the North Carolina synodical, will represent this state at this meeting, . Dr. and Mrs. Boxley of Ken tucky, spent the week-and in this city, en route to Winston- Salem, where they will be the guests of Mrs. Boxley's cousin, Mrs. Sandiford. Her many friends were glad to see her again. Messrs. A. C„ J. G. and J. D. Leatherman of Henry, Route 1, were pleasant callers at The Democrat Office Monday and gave us a subscription for The Democrat. These gentlemen are prosperous farmers of Lincoln county, and good citizens. Besides the delegates from the Abel A Shuford chapter of the U. D. C., who will go to the Convention in Charlotte next week. Mrs H. C. Menzies will go to represent the Dixie Grey's, of which organization she is presi dent. Mr. Walter *S. Gabriel was found unconscious in his barn at Terrell, this county, Friday morning and died Friday after noon. He i 3 survived by a wife and four children. For 20 years he had been connected with the business of Mr. T. F. Conner at Terrel', Co'on Young, a white boy 14 years of age, had his right fore arm badly injured Monday at Brookford Mills, where he was working. The arm was caught in the picker rolls and was badly lacerated up to the elbow. He wss brought to the Richard Baker hospital here where the wounded arm was dressed. Midshipman Howard Council!, U. S. N., left Hickory Monday for Annapolis, Md., where he is taking the course at the U. S. Naval Academy. His many friends regretted paying "good bye" to the young man who is so popular in our town, and we wish him every honor the Navy can bestow in his future career. Rev. and Mrs. C. L. Crane and Master Charlie, Jr., and Mi3S Francis Dixon left for Richmond, Va., Monday. Mrs. Crane will give a talk at the State Normal College en route to Richmond. Mr. and Mrs. Crane will take a post graduate course at the Union Theological Ssminiry before returning to their work in African RetvE. de F. Heald, Jr., who has -been acting as priest-in charge of St. Paul's Church at Wilmington, for the past eighteen months; has accepted the rector ship of the parish, beginning with the last Sunday in October: Mr. Heald expects to pass the autumn in Hickory, but will di vide the winter .between Wash ington and Wilmington. Rev. C. T. Squires of Lenoir, was a Hickory visitor Tuesday. Mr. Chal Troutman of Marion, spent Sunday with his brother, Dr. Paul Troutman. Mrs. Hoke and daughter, of Granite Falls, were in thi3 city shopping Tuesday, Miss Beatrice Cobb of Morgan ton, was the guest of Miss Fran cis Lentz a few days ago. Mrs. George Herman went to Granite Falis Tuesday to spend some time with her sister, Mrs. Whisnant, Mr. and Mrs; S, P. Bisanar and Mr. Geo. E. Bisanar went to Lenoir yesterday t:> attend the funeral of Rev. J. F. England, a relative of theirs, which was held at that place yesterdav afternoon at 3 o'clock. Miss Davidson stopped over a few days with Miss Francis Lentz eri route from Black Moun tain to her home in Statesviile. Her friends will be glad to learn her health has improved very much. The Hickory Library Associa tion is trying to raise money to make some needed improve ments; any one who has old Sat urday Evening Posts, Ladies' Home Journals or papers of that size that they would give, please notify the committee as they will sell these papers to the chair factory. Mrs, D, E. Moose was brought home yesterday from Spartan burg where she was spending some time with her son, Mr. M. Moose. Mrs. Moose is now at the Richard Baker hospital for treatment, she had had a light stroke of paralisis a few days ago. We hope her a speedy re covery. Mrs. Moose is the moth er of Messrs. John and Frank Moose, two of Hickory's most highly respected young men. Mrs. W. H. Johnson wa3 pleas antly surprised last Thursday evening when a number of her friends arrived and made it known that she was to have a birthday party on her fifieth birthday. Music and games were the amusement of the evening after which Mrs. B. P. Link and Miss Mvrtice Johnson served ice cream and cake and home-made candy, Mrs. Johnson received many pretty and useful gifts. Among the guests were Mrs. J, A. Johnson of Brookford and her charming niece. Miss Gertrude Crompton, of Providence, R, I. Miss Myra Yount entertainedla few of her friends at a birthday party at the home of her brother, Mr. N. A. Yount, last Wednes day afternoon from 4 to 6 o'clock. A number of interesting games were played and piano duets and other musical selections by Misses Ciara Sherril, Myrtice Johnson, Mattie Sherrill and Catharine Waycaster were enjoyable fea tures of the occasion. The guests were Misses Lenore Eckard, Clara Sherrill, Aurora Rhodes, Catha rine Waycaster, Mattie Sherrill, Myrtice Johnson and Mrs, L. C. and John L. Yount and Mrs. A. J, Link. Just before the guests de parted some kodak pictures were made and delicious ice cre&m and wafers were served. Every one present had a enjoyable time and wished Miss Yount many happy returns of the day. Mission Day Services. Next Sunday will be mission l day at the Baptist Church. In the Sunday School, there will be appropriate exercises by the children. At 11 o'clock, Rev. W. R. Civic Improvement League is Organized at West Hickory At the home of Mrs. C. H. Kale, Tuesday afternoon, the West Hickory Civic Improvement League was organized with the following officers; Mrs. Hutchi son, president; Mrs. Burcti, first vice president; Mrs. Abernethv, second vice oresident; Mrs. Kale, third vice president; Mrs, Moretz secretary; Mrs. Childers, .assis tant Secretary; Miss Ola Lawter, Treasurer. A committee was appointed to canvass the town in the interest of new members, The secretary was instructed to get into com munication with Dr. Rankin of Raleigh, and Mr, A. W. McAlis ter of Greenboro for helpful in formation as to the work of the league. Among the first tasks the ladies will address themsel ves to is to start a movement to secu r e a suitable site for a town cemetery, and a community building for social and education al purposes. Co-operation is desired with similar organiza tions in the town of Hickory. Next meeting October 13, with Mrs. Kale. Revival to Begin at Bethel. Revival services will begin at Bethel Methodist ehurch next Sunday Morning at 11 o'clock, and continue through the follow week. Rev. J. N. Patton; a very successful revivalist, has been secured to do the preach ing, and all denominations are cordially invited to attend ana co-operate in the services. There will be three services on Sunday and dinner will be served on the ground. This is»''Home Coming" day. Come and meet your friends, and enjoy the servi ces. Booster Club to Meet. A meeting of the Hickory Boosters will be held in the Globe Theatre Friday night of this week. All who can conveniently do so are requested to attend, whether members or not. The object of this club is to boost Hickory, both at home and abroad, and to work in harmony with all other organizations for the advancement of Hickory.
