BAKER MOUNTAIN SCHOOL
SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
Tho educational w ork carried out by
the Baker Mountain School began in
the year 1907, conducted by Mr. and
Mr. M. II. Johnston, who are still
managers.
The school at that time would ac
commodate forty students. The work
from the very first was of such pro
portions that it was necessary to have
assistant teachers. By 1909 the call
was so (rrcat from students who de
sired board at the school that it was im-
Ecrativc that a school nome should
o built. This made it necessary to
have an addition to the school in 1910.
The hoarding students have increased
to su"h an extent an addition had to
made to the school home. It has
a capacitv at the prss.-r.t of thirty
sijcvtudent:;.
U in: three and one half miles to
the south of Hildcbran, it has a most
b-au'iful location. Its scenery is be
yond description. In the -distance one's
ye catches a glimpse of the Black
i id Grandfather mountains with the
U'JutifuI hills lying between. The
f et , are superb. This section of
'- e country is known for its wildwood
stridors and its rambling brooks.

NOTABLE
Superintendent Chas. M. Staley last
light made the following report on the
ork during the fall in the city
chools:
"I beg to report that the fall term
f the city graded schools was highly
uccessful. The percentage of school
population enrolled was greater than
n any previous year; the average
laily attendance was much better than
iver before; and the teachers reported
larger percentage of pupils doing
lasting work than in any previous
year.
,;The census for 1915 showed an
"ncrease in school population of only
35 over that of 1914. The increase
in enrollment for the fall term just
ended was 53 over the fall term of
1914. A comparison of the enroll
ment and attendance for 1914 and for
915 is given.

"The teachers report that excellent
ork has been done in all the grades.
rn the essential subjects of spelling,
reading, writing, arithmetic, English
language, grammar, and composition
more work is now required "ian
jver before. The mid year examina
ions showed that better work is be
'ng done in these subjects than ever
before.
"An unusually fine school spirit ex
"sts among pupils, teachers, and par
3nts. Every thing has worked in fui!
harmony, and it would be hard to
ind a better school spirit than exists
a Hickory.
"I desire to call the attention ol
the council to the fact that ste - must,
be taken to provide more room for
the schools. The 340 children enroll
2d at the South school are all that the
building can accommodate. At the
North school there ere 494 enrolled
544 in the elementary grades, and 150
'n the high school grades. At the
end of this year there will be at least
G5 pupils promoted from the seventh
grade to the high school. That will
make it necessary to have two teach
res for the Eighth grade. But every
rocm in both buildings is now in use.
"An estimate based on the present
enrollment in the high school grades
jhows that there will probably be
175. pupils in the high school next
year. I would recommend that stepa
be taken to provide a rgn school
building of not less than eight rooms.
Within the next three vears there win
be two hundred nupils in the high
school department if the present rate
of increase continues.
For several reasons it is desirable
to have the high school grades in a
building separate frcm the elementary
grades. Such a division will be of
great advantage both to the high
school pupils and to the pupils of the
elementary grades.

ELDER SHIREMAN WAS
. PIONEER IN SCHOOLS
! Hildebran, Jan. 5. The work of
Rural Schools of North Caroiina,
1 -hich just closed their convention at
Baker Mountain school last week, was
b gun by Elder D. T. Shireman in 1896.
The first school was located at Hil-
iderbran. The first teacher was Wil
liam Johnston. This school had two
rooms with a capacity of eighty pu
pils. In a short t'me it was necessary
to build a school heme for the benefit
of students who desired to come to
that school. This home would ac
comodate about 20 stuwenrs. The
place is now known as the Alfalfa
; Dairy Farm and is owned by Mr. J.
j y Beach.
i In 1902 Elder Shireman left Hil
debran and started a school at Toluca,
here he erected a one room school
i building and a school heme for the
1 benefit of boarding students. This
continued until Elder Shoreman's
health caused him to discontinue it.
