FRIDAY EVENING tilCKORY DAILY RECORD PAGE FOUR AT THE OLD HOME Well, we an at the old home at last. We reached Davie iasi ru'sday. We came all the way from .... . a. i . . . m Statesville throutfii me couj one relative's to another's until we r. ached county line. There we took the Jitney from Statesville to Win ston f.r Mckville. a distance otf ttn mile, over a ood sand-clay road, rtochinir there at 0 p. xn. At Mocksville, we were the Ruests . . j..,.tir nml fam.lv. Mrs. V Stroud. It to us was a joyous visit. She has three children, w.c younjrext. a tfirl who cant talk plain vt-t The sweetest words we heard while at dauu'htres' were, "Papa and "danpa." While littlo Louise can t talk plain, her eyes, m'nd and heart im better trained, because she thinks she has the "goodest and pur tiest" danpa of any little girl that is, on her mother's side of the house. And of course, that grandpa knows ihe is the prettiest, smartest and sweetest rrand daughter in the worm, 1-xcept noc, and the reader must Kuenfl that one. The grandsons were all life and were rejoicing that their school is to begin today. Mocksville looks natural. Many of its citizens of 30 years ago, are stih living and are the same kind hearted people. The town is growing, but j.lov and sure. It needs more man ufacturing plants to give employment to labor, and thereby create a lar ger local market for all kinds of farm products, which the fertile lands n round can abundantly supply. In all our trip through three counties, we have not seen more hay, better corn ami cotton than here in Davte. It's true the Hood did not damage the crops here as it did in Iredell and es pecially as it d'd in Catawba. Davie is noted for t is broad, level and fer tile fields, and progressive farmers. On Thursday, son-in-law took us over to Winston. That city is grow ing Everybody seemed busy and in a big hurry. All due to the to bacco market, large manufacturing plants and big corporations, trusts, if you please which we thank God was in our prayers, and curse the devil for n our politics. We met several Hickory people there, show ing that Winston is on the same map. We saw and heard Hon. Newton li. Uaker speak. He is a small man and younger than we took him to be. He is a eo.ul. niain and fair talker. He win defending Mr. Wilson's ad ministration. He had a very large crowd, and must of it was pleased with h s visit and especially his speech. On Saturday morning, our half brother, M. H. Dedmon, came for us and brought us down here. He owns, and lives on the old home place, which grows nearer and dearer every time we see it. It was the joy of our life to see and be at it once more. The change and improve ments of the roads changed appear- some of vou will ever have a chance tobe Saved. We heard a man say open ly, "That's a I lie." That very man took "cramp-colic" (appendicitis) that night and died in three days. They have a new school house and a new' Baptist church at Turntines now. That is a sacred place to us, for near it, grandpa and grandma Snyder are resting under the green sod. It was a good meeting to us, but most of the large congregation were strangers to us. When we got back to our brother Mack's, we heard, it seemed, that same "scritch owl" that sang us to sleep when a boy. We didn't know then that placing the shovel in the fire would stop its shrill noise, but we know it now. Sunday morning, having already nassed Jesico, our brother took us to Jerusalem. We did not fall j among the thieves.. When a boy.i we were one of Jerusalem church s j charter members. We wanted; t . .... 1 . c. l - I visit it once more, oe in us ouuuuy school and hear another sermon there We only saw seven or eight of the brethren. The others have died, and moved away. There loo, we visited the graves of father and' mother, and four sisters and twoi brothers. While it was sad, yet as we beheld them, sweet and sacred, memories came to us. On the wayj home, we heard another sermon at: Concord Methodist church. We weni; back there for preaching at night, j It is only a mile from home. Ilerej is where Prof. S. A. Harris of Hick- ory learned us U spell at the end of a hickory. We thank him fori it. Here' we taught our first 1 school, in which little Maggie Swink learned her letters and to spell every t word in Webster's Blue back in aj four months' term. iShe is Mrs.j Swlcgood and is matron of Mocks ville hotel. Ask her. At Concord we saw many neighbors, school-mates and students. j Now in conclusion, will say a few things of home an dmother. Tnese notes are penned in the house and; in the very room in whicn we were; born. The house is a two full story structure, and is about 90 years old.1 Father sawed every piece of timber; ;n it w'.th an old-time saw, run by i water over a big wheel. There Is not a piece of sap timber in it. It has been recovered twice, and still looks and feels well to us at least. In this room the same clock that struck the hour of our birth, is still, sluing on the same mamie piece and Is running and keep'ng as good time as t did 'JO years ago when new. It is 35 inches high and 17 broad. Its running gear is made ofj wood, and runs by weights, and looks as neat as our modern clocks. It was made by Elisha Hotchkiss, Jr.,1 at Burlington, Conn. In this house! 32 children have been born, 20 of us,! 9 of Mack's and 3 of the grand ch'A dren. A sacred, historplace. Would; like to say more, but fear th s is I . ! too long now. 1 We leave this morning on our re No Reason Why Any Citizen Should Be Impoited Upon by Anyone Claiming to be an Agent. There is no reason why any citizen should be imposed upon by anyone representing himself as an agent of an insurance company. Saturday was spent roaming over the farm where we learned to p;ov and to hoe, to reap and to mow, and di I trickory and learned hickory. All of us 14 in all went to the brushy woods for muscadines. After eat in r all we could, we are satisfied we left ten bushels. Every tree and lush seemed covered with vines and they were all full. At night, we went to Turntine church for preach ing. About 42 years ago, we helped in the first Sunday school held there in an old school house. At that Svhool house about 1860, a school U ache r shot and killed a father who t.'nked up on liquor and went there to k il the teacher because he whipped bad boy the day before. We have folks yet who think teachers must not enforce discipline. The court said the teacher did right to whip the boy and then defend himself. Once at that old school house, Rev. S. F. Conrad was holding a meeting. tin bunuay evening, he called for mourners. In finishing his appeal. ne sain, i ma win oe the last chance I J. F. CLICK Monday, Sept. 11, 1916. In the Days of Abraham People Had Clear Ideas of Personal Liabili ties for Fires. In the days of Abraham, 2285-2243 B. C, Hammurabi, king of Babylon, promulgated a law that those guilty of arson or Incendiarism should be thrown into the fire. In the 22d chap ter of Exodua and 6th verse the great lawgiver, Moses, caught hold of the same idea and wrote as follows: "If fire break out, and catch In thorn (dry grass, piles of refuse and rul blsh) so that the stacks of corn, ot the standing corn, or the field, be con sumed therewith, he that kindleth th fire (through carelessness or an? Other means) shall surely make restl tutlon." Some clear ideas as to pei sonal liability were evidently entei tained by the ancient lawmaker which their modern successors would do well to cultivate.
