Honesty U not only the right policy, but it is the basis of right living. The Germans are putting little Ru mania out of business, thanks to the blunders of the entente commanders, but it is to be observed that the Teutons are not making any progress elsewhere. Little nations make good meat for the Germans and their al lies, and big nations do not get very far in attacking them. The Record will take a holiday to morrow, but the paper will be issued again Friday. Christmas and r Thanskgiving are the only days the Record suspends publication, Sundays excepted, and as most of our readers are enjoying the holidays, they will not miss the paper much. An awful squall is going up from Charlottesville on the eve of the Virginia-Carolina football game in Richmond, but the fact remains that the Virginians retained four old men to the Tar Heels' three. It is to be assumed that those per sons who have begun a boycott on eggs and turkeys are not planning to load up on them. iDon't forget the orphans tomor row. America's first composer of any nof waa William Billines who was horn in Boston. October 1846. In his youth he was a tanner, but a love for music led him to become a teacher of singing and a composer of psalms tunes, which eventually found their way into every church choir of New England and become a great favor ite with the people. He published no fewer than six collections of tunes, all founded up on the new school of religious music then coming in vogue in England. Their contrast to the dismal old tunes previously in use naturally crave them an immense popularity; and, in fact, they effected a musical revolution in all the English colonies of America. They were far from being perfect in melody and harmony and would be considered very crude today, but the composer displayed an originality ap proaching genius, and had he enjoyed the educational advantages open to composers of today, his compositions would doubtless have possessed a permanent value.
