Dr. L. B. McBrayer, superintendent of the state sanatorium for the treat ment of 'tuberculosis made the state ment here that the free service of that institution in making examina tions for tuberculosis free to the peo ple of the state would be continued only on condition that patients or the physicians who are sending the pa tients write before hand and arrange for a date for such an examination, otherwise a fee of $5 will be charged for the examination I'c is neces sary, also, stated Doctor McBrayer, that patients present themselves be tween the hours of 8 and 11 a. m. on the date set for them, otherwise '.hey would not only have to wait till the next day but would also be charged the fee of $5. This ruling is necessary, according to Doctor McBrayer, for the reason that some days such large numbers present themselves for this service as to gra'cely interfere with the regu lar work of the institution and work excessive demands upon the medical staff. Last year 411 such examina tions were made and the present out look is that twice this number will ask for the service this year. '"This is the most encouraging sign we have," said Doctor McBrayer, "that we have tuberculosis on the run. Wdien people demand an ear ly diagnosis and want to head off the disease while it can be done, then we know we are winning ground " "Pa, what is an escalator?" PEARL OF THE ARMY" AT THE PASTIME TODAY 'The following is a short synop sis of the second episode of Pathes great preparedness serial, "Pearl of the Army" which will be shown at 'the Pastime Theatre this afternoon and tonight. : Captain Payne is court martialed and convicted of treason because he lost a secret dispatch under suspic ious circumstances. Unable to ex plain, he is placed in prison prepara tory to being drummed out of ser vice. In his solitary prison room, Pearl Dare visits him and, placing her hand in his.tells him she has-come to say she believes in him. Jiefora he can voice his gratitude, an order ly enters announcing the time is up. The news of his downfall comes as welcome news to Major Brent, a less favored rival for Peail Dare':; hand and millions. But on the hori zon of his hopes a cloud drifts from out of the past in the person of Bertha Boon, a girl he has wronged and who has a miniature sighed by him years ago 'to my darling wife." During a stormy meeting with her, Brent is astounded to discover that the locket which holds his portrait is strangely like the one lost by Payne, bu'c he is unable to secure it from her, and lives in constant fear of its power. The Silent Menace visits Col. Dares borne, and is discovered and pursued by Pearl in a taxi. A rug in the taxi suddenly comes to life. It overcomes her, and what next she gains consciousness she is in an un known spot. Following some foot pirate she discovers "the secret meet ing place of the Foreign Alliance, where the plots for the downfall of this nation are hatched. She con trives an entrance, overcomes the Silent Menace with an ornament, and has nearly succeeded in snatching the mask from his face when his lieutenants discover her and she is compelled to flee.
