April 5. Four big ap propriation bills which failed in the senate at the last session were re passed in auick succession by the house, thus clearing the way for the war resolutioh which will be brought up today at 10 o'clock. The bills carried appropriations of more than $440,000,000. They were. Army $240,000,000: sundry civil, $138,241, 000; general deficiency, $62,583,000, and military academy, $1,349,000 No changes were made m the form of any of the measures, as they passed thehouse at the last session. Numerous emergency amendments will be added to them in the senate and the final bills will be drafted in conference in the interest of speed. Many additional appropriation b'ils mill have to be passed during the session, but the size or form of any of them willn ot be known until con gress has declared a state of war ex isting and the executive branch of the government has submitted its plans for prosecuting hostilities Tentative plans now being discuss ed are to pass a special deficiency bill similar to one carrying $50,0J0 000 which was passed prior to the Spanish-American war to be used in any emergency which may arise in the various departments. Before the vote on the sundry civil bill, Chairman Fitzgerald of the ap propriation committee addressed the house on the need for rigid economy and efficient service in the coming crisis. LENOIR GIRLS WIN The Lenoir College girls' basket ball team met the Asheville high school team in an interesting game yester day on the boys' court at Lenoir Col lege. Both teams were evenly matched, but the Lenoir girls proved the better, winning the game by a score of 8 to 2. Miss Sallie Wike was the star player for Lenoir, throw ing three field and two foul goals. The centeir for Asheville also did some splendid playing.
