Hickory people may be able to con tribute no great force for the battle liel(U in Europe, but they can help the nation by producing as much food us possible. Every pound of some tiling grown intelligently is so much gained for the nation, is so much power to hurl against the enemies of tho republic. Tho mass meeting at the Chamber of Commerce tonight will result, it is hoped, in directing the energy in this eily and section that is so wil ling to work. We want to know, for example, what kinds of food to pro duce, how to preserve them, wnat it will cost, ami many such things. la this climate there are . vegeta bles that will grow all the year round; tho kingly cabbage and the Kingiiliy eouard are examples. No man in tho United State.-, President Wilson probably excepted, is better known than the co.onel, and his name and fame would inspire the men of Britain ! and Franca to new valor, if such a thing wtro possible. Thousands of tho bravest and daringest of Amer icans would Hock to .Mr. Roosevelt's standards, and their presence in Eu rope might moan more tliau just so many troops Hun;.': iiuo tho battle. Uo betieve Colonel Koose.olt is anx ious to serve humanity and he can serve it by leading an army, just as ..Mr. jlryan can by delivering ad drcjjcs. There is nothing to be said agam.it cither man, but wo like to taiuk on' leJdy at such a time in the nation'i hid.ory, though Mr. Uryan l.:u t:ur:J r.i:..ij.i' as a private and Itdcd hii mcaiu to relieving the uw.ii (.ring. The Uritish advance on the 12-mi!e front south of Arras to south of Lens is on a part of the old German line not abandoned by llindenburg in his strategical retreats. The British struck hard at a point where the blow was unexpected and judging from first reports have met with consider able success. Tho Vimy ridge, which may be tho key to the town of Lens and tho rich coal fields of France, al ready is in British hands, and the Germans may be forced to retire a little faster than llindenburg contem plated. The capture of so many soldiers and guns would indicate as much. For' our part we have no sarcasm for Mayor Kirkpatrick of Char lotte. Colonel Kirkpatrick is out spoken and frank and says that which is within him. If the intentions of those who have tried to "ride" him were half us good, the country would bo butter olF. Now that 'iba, Panama, Brazil and Argentina lave entered the war on the Hide of United States, there is hope in Ct.tw!a cohnty that Representa tive Webb will side with the American peoplo. it.VKLU SlNUS LET! Lit TO AMERICANS IN FRANCE Washington, April 12 Secretary UuKcr lias prepared a communication to iineiicans now serving in the rreiiCii aviation corps assuring them taut the United States government recognizes tne services they are ren uenng and is desirous tnat tney snail continue their work. 1'ersons wlio ieared that the entry of the United Mates in the war wouid cause tne American fliers to re sign Ii om tne 1 rench service and has ten home to take their places in the American military establishments called the matter to the attention of tne secretary. Hie Americans are u vaiuaole lighting element of the I rencn air service, and war depart menc omeiais leer that they are do mg more important work at the ac tual lroul Uaa i.icy could renuer at home. Omcials indicated that the adop tion or the Aii.eri.au army uniiorm oy the iners in creation as reported from 1'aris woaiu not be opposed by tho American government, aitnougn tho step had nee been sanctioned. Presumably tho Irencn military au thorities have permitted tne Ameri cans to abandon the regular uniform of the French air service lor a costume that owiud distinguish them as Americans.
