Seed to plant an acre of Irish potatoes costs about $40 this spring. Seed sweet potatoes will not cost more The yield of sweet potatoes per acre is usually greater than that of Irish potatoes and as a food they are as nutritious. Sweet potatoes may be grown throughout the southern states and, of course, in certain oth sections. Specialists in the U. S. department of agriculture are urg ing an increased acreage of this crop wherever it can be easily grown. Sweet potatoes, it is pointed out, are the south's chief instrument for a quick and effective increase of the food supply. Seed is plentiful; last year's crop was the second larg est ever produced. By means of vine cuttings it is possible to plant almost unlimited areas of this crop and at the same time conserve the present supply. That is, a farmer who wishes to plant 10 acres will bed seed enough- say 8 to 10 bushels to get slips for one acre. Vine cut tiiKgs from this kcre wou!d plant many more acres, plantings being possible until the first of August in the lower south. This system, now widely used in the south, enables the utilization of land from which early potatoes, cabbage, and other truck crops have been taken. Sweet potatoes are not expensive to grow. The main limiting factor songs will be sung at this service and will be led by the junior choir. The flower decorations will be un der the direction of the young ladies of the Philathea class. MISS LITTLE WON MUSIC PRIZE OF FEDERATION (Miss P.sarl Little of Hickory, hon orary member of the Thursday Study Club, won the Duncan cup in the mu sic contest at the State Federation of Women's Clubs at Durham this week, her song, "A Child's Wish Granted," winning out in the compe tition. The song was rendered last nig-ht in Craven M'emorial hall by Miss Rosa Warren. "A Child's Wish Granted," was dedicated by the author to her little nephew, Herman Pegram. VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR BOY SCOUT LEADERS New York, May 5 A call for 100,000 men to volunteer as Boy Scout leaders was issued here by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America. This method has the further advantage of preventing the trans fer of diseases which are carried on the tubers. The south doesn't need to learn how to trrow sweet potatoes, the special ists points out. Farmers know how to produce large yields of this crop. But the farmer must be impressed with the necessity of increasing his acreage of this crop, and then, when harvest comes, to prevent enormous loss from improper handling and storing. The best way to keep sweet potatoes is to store them in well-ventilated storage houses, not "dugouts." Storage houses should be made ready as soon as possible. In Farmers' Rulletin 548. "Storing and MarKet- inc- Sweet Potatoes," instruction for building such houses and for con verting old and unoccupied buildings are given. Disquieting m reports from Petrograd of differences g between the provisional government 'H and committees of workmen and sol- S diers are causing concern here, but it was said after the cabinet meeting ' m that no official information had been g received to shake the confidence felt's here that the Russian democratic lea-; H ders will hold their organization to gether and keep up the fight against Germany. One effect of the reports probably will be to hurry the departure of po litical and economic and railroad com missions which President Wilson is to send to aid the provisional govern ment in rehabilitating Russian econ omically and industrially.
