It de iuoimraied more than anything else in recent years the unity of this com munity, us iaith in the city todiy and its nopes Aor the city in the future, is a gi..u spectacle, the celebration was woik.y of a city three times the sue ot A-.civory. In the parade and massed uout the spsakers' stand were at least 1U.UU0 persons. In the immense crowd there was the best of order. One was impress ed by this fact. Ten years ago nothing like it could have occurred witnouc boisterous conduct marring tne observance, or at least causing tne omcers and those responsible for tne an air to fear incidents of a dis creuiuoie sort. This is mentioned oecause ths conduct was so good as to command notice. The Merchants' Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the Commu nity Club, the Knights of Pythias, the Woodmen of the World, the Ju nior Order, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the military company, the boy scouts, the schools, the bands, Lenoir College, the fire department, the Red Cross, the citizens generally and the guests of the city are re sponsible for the tremendous success of the celebration. Chairman J. D. Elliott wa3 an ideal master of ceremonies and the addresses of all the speakers were worthy of themselves and the occa sion. Both Mayor Yount and for mer Mayor S. L. Whitener did hon or to the occasion; Mr. Leake Carra way of the Southern Public Utilities Company assured the people of the willingness of his company to meet hickory more than half way in it3 ef forts to develop the city, and Mr. John A. McRae of Charlotte, the prin cipal speaker, sounded a patriotic note in keeping with the time and place. The singing, under the di rection of Mrs. Chadwick, was in spiring. , In fact the affair was such as one could hope for but not expect to see realized. It demonstrated most ef fectively the spirit of Hickory, and it marked a greater era in the life of this community. The white way, as satisfactory as it is, was but an in cident in the life of a progressive commuunity; the solid interest shown by all concerned is epochal in its au gury of the future Hickory. WEST HICKORY'S CHANCE HICKORY DAILY RECORD FRIDAY EVEMXG The people of West Hickory will de cide on Monday whether or not they want better school facilities, and the people of Hickory are greatly inter ested in the matter, for what affects West Hickory affects Hickory, and vice versa. The proposition is to build a modern school house to cost not less thin ten or twelve thousand dollar. The county has appro priated threo thousand dollars, cor porations and individuals have sub scribed three thousand, the old prop erty can b9 sold for fifteen hundred and the balance is to be borrowed from the state at 4 per cent, this money to be repaid in ten annual in stallments. It is to provide for this debt that the increased tax is called for, and we feel sure the people of West Hickory will not let nas3 an od- portunity for getting practically two dollars for one in actual property and about ten dollars for one in ultimate benefit. If this increased tax faite to carry, W9 believe it will be the first town of this size in the state to take a backward step educationally. Record readers in looking over the paper yesterday must have observed some advertisers whose names and goods seldom appear in any paper. Personally the Record desires to thank the Red! Cross IJidies for showing them ths value of advertising. Most of our merchants know that they can not thrive unless they spend good money in the newspapers, but there are men in business here and else where who have not realized that tht way to sell is to let the public know about it. THE) lihli'HlSALS The wisdom of reprisals is always debatable, but particularly so when one of the opponents wants only the pretext for committing any sort of acts against helpless men and women. Ihe French and British, thougn stung by the senseless and inhuman attacks by Zeppelins on defenseless towns, wisely refrained from coun-j tering for many months, and when, ihey did engage in reprisals they were , careful to attack lortihed towns, j In the last few months French Hid British hospital ships, bearing; the wounded, have been torpedoed as if they were warships. Acts like these further arouse the people of th. allied countries and reprisals result ed. Now it is announced from Berlin that three times the number of Ger man officers placed aboard a hospital ship will be exposed to French fire in the west, and we may be sure that this will be done with German thor oughness. The allies have everything to lose in engaging in reprisals; they cannot hope to equal or shame the exponents of frightfulness and the sooner they jibandon this sort of business the bet ter. They should not want the his tories to recount the excesses indulg ed in by both sides. Let them keep their fighting as clean as possible. COMING TO WILSON "HYSTERICAL ECONOMY" Ohio State Journal. The advisory commission of the council of national defense has warn ed people against the socalled "hys terical economy" refusing to buy in order to get ready or any future emergency. Buying should proceed along the line of present wants and not to future needs. Besides, who would want to be caught at some time of great stringency with a hun dred bushels of potatoes and ten bir rals of flour on hand; while his neighbor is out of both, unless, of course, he wants to divide up with the needy which is probably not the object of laying up. No let us not paralyze future business by reducing the future demand. Let us move al ong during these perilous times in the good old hand to mouth way, each one accepting the lot of all and bearing the common sacrifice with patience and good will. If there is any suffering, it wouud be well for the nation if we felt it together. Mr. F. J. Flagler has purchased from Col. Robt. Ransom the cottage on Eighth avenue known as the Reynolds property. Hen- ry Wntterson, the former responsi ble for putting Woodrow Wilson .in' line for the presidency, and the lat ter one of three men Colonel Har vey and Major Hemphill and himself to "conspire" for the defeat of the former Princeton presidenlt, have "hit the trail," as the Courier-Journal expresses it. Both are frank. They recognize in President Wilson those qualities of statesmanship which Colonel liar-1 vey was first to see and with Wat tcrson and Hemphill was later to de ny, and both distinguished public- j ists accord him full measure of cred-' it. They line Mr. Wilson up with Washington and Lincoln, except that they think the president's war mes sage was worth more to the world than any address delivered by either Mti in g tan or Lincoln. And German leaders are amazed because German-Americans have not betrayed the country that has fur nished them shelter and given them opportunities to prosper as any other citizen. At any rate, the officers in the fatherland will not be able to impose any sentences on our fr'ends. One million New Yorkers turned out to welcome the marshal of and General Joffre cast a wishful' eye on about 200,000 men. n IMP It was a white way with frills.
