ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS SATURDAY, MAY 12, 1917 THE SCHOOL YEAR 1916-17 With th9 presentation of diplomas to the 16 graduates of the high school Friday night, another school year has come to a close in Hickory. The seniors have received advice en ough; they will (enter college or bus iness, and their friends, of whom the Record is one, wish for them the great est possible success. This paper desires to speak more of the future than of the past. The scholastic year just closed has besn a trying one on the school author ities and to a lesser extent on the pupils. Any change in as big an enterprise as the public schools caus es more or less effort before read justment comes naturally. During the last few weeks of the session, however, there have been indications that promise even better results in the future. " The patrons of the school and the older students have taken more Interest in the work, and iVcy will continue to display whole some interest next year. With the new high school bui'ding in use next fall, with additional teachers and facilities for taking care of more children, Hickory schools will have their best year. It is not too much to hope that there will b? no more cases of scarlet fever to inter fere with classes, and it ought to be a safe proposition that .there are few more children to b afflicted with measles. Everything taken into considera tion, the past school year was good. The next should be 50 per cent bet ter, or as good as it is possible to mak9 It. regard to school buildings. Which deserves the best care and surround ings a fine boy or girl or a prospec tive porker? lne small increase in tax is no better school buildings than we have, and West Hickory has a greater pop ulation than all combined. Citizen says taxes are high enough. So is Hour and meat, but he can't af- loru 10 bPMU1g. . uuauuii jitem. Then we win have a social are in favor of it, it looks as if the, center for all where old and young can people who have children to educats; realize a benefit, a place where proud could stand it. I think I know who fatners and mothers may see their "Citizen is. He has thraj chilaren son3 and daughters prepared for a who go to school and the only school; happy and useful citizenship. "What tax he pays is $1.80 a year. His parent can be so narrow" and selfish increased tax would amount to just as to say: what was good enough yoc a year, while the Ivey Mill's for me is good enough for my chii wou,d be $150. lhis liiik about dren? should b.a there such he is the Ivey mill not paying the $2,000 not worthy the name and in ail can- i-iuimseu is au loousnness. ,Ior shnu rf hft nshamprl of hiinsplf jt'llliiSLlJllIIJllJllllIlIlilliilllimilllllll Piedmont Council No. 43, Ji o. Catawba Lodge No. 54 K. of P. 1 QUESTION FOR VOTER The Record would not advis? ths citizens of Wst Hickory to take a step that would injure them, their children and their town for anything one could mention. It believes the best thing the good people in this thriving town can do is to provide good schools and to give their chil dren the same opportunities afforded by other communities, some of them not as well off as West Hickory The man who is conscientiously opposed to bet'?r school facilities, who does not thHk that his children and his neigh bor' children are entitled to an equal chance with , children elsewhere, should spend tomorrow searching his soul. Let thim employ his heirt and his conscience, let him ask the ques tion, "la it right that I should cast a vote that might deprive my chil dren or other children of a chance to make better men and women?" If the opponent of the school meets the issue fairly and squarely, if he divests himself of prejudice, the Rec ord Tuesday will be able to announce that West Hickory Is as progressive as Conover, Oak Hill, Hickory or any other town in the state. THE AMERICAN MISSION President Wi'son's commission to' Russia Is composed of men in every class and endeavor and all the men are well known in the United States and some of them in Russia. Charles Edward Russell, the Socialist mem ber, tindoubtedly is known in the bi eastern country and he should wieM a powerful influence with the radi. cal elements. Mr. Russell was pro ally before the war and goes in the struggle something greater than a "truggJa for riche The A men can Federation of Labor is reprsent--ed and during the long journey to Petrograd th? members, whose views on politics are very much at variance, will have an opportunity the brtter to study sympathetically the view Point of the others. That mission should be helpful to Russia. Citizens says also that the South- i irn Desk Co. expects to sell some' desks. Citizen knows better inan that. lhis company proppse to give the desks, and besides will pay a large proportion of the increased tax. Citizen is afraid that the proper authorities cannot spend the mony judiciously As a matter of fact the building committee has asked Mr G. F. Ivey to serve as a member, and if necessary they can get other as sistance. Lvery number of the school board is a man of good judg ment and intelligence and there will be no trouble along these lines. My tax for schools is not much,' but I pay it willingly and I believe the great majority of West Hickory peopo agree with me, and will not only vote, but will work for the elec-tlon- CITIZEN NO. 2.
