Sunday was as warm a day as this section is likely to feel this summer. Ine mercury registered 92 degrees. Monday it stood at 91. Dr and Mrs. P. D Pence of St. Charles, Va., are attending com mencement at Lenoir College, Dr Pence being a graduate of the class of 1904. Governor Bickett will deliver the litterary address at Davenport Col ege Lenoir, tomorrow morning at 10:30 o'clock. The great fire in Atlanta appears to be the worst that has ever occurred in the south, being even more serious than the Augusta fire over a year ago. If amateur gardeners are desir ous of visiting a real garden, they might ask permission of Mr. J. A. Sellers to inspect his and learn from him some of the tricks of the trade. Rain in the western states caused the postponement of all big base ball games and showers are due in this section in a few days. A good rain would make the potato crop. Senator Overman and Representa tive Wfebb both near neighbors of Hickory are in charge of the espion age bill in the senate and house and head the conferees from their spective bodies. re- Statesville is to organize an am bulance for service on the French front. Julian Morrison, son of the late J. K. Morrison, will be the driver. Attorney Joe Murphy has ransack ed history to find out how many men North Carolina furnished in the Revolutionary and Civil wars and the figures are interesting. In a pop ulation of 385,000 the eoleny contri buted 25,000 soldiers to Washing ton's cause, and in a population of 992,000 the state sent 162,000 men to the firing line or the home guards in the Wfer Between the States. Of this number 38,000 never returned. The figures for the Civil war prob able ore too high, as most historians place the number of troops at 127,-000. GERMANS ARE DRIVEN FROM POSITIONS BY FRENCH With the French Armies on the French Front, From a Staff Corres pondent of the Associated Press, May 21. While the Germans were throwing masses of men against the French positions along the Chemin des Dames, only to suffer defeat with teriffk losses, the French last night effected at attank in the Mor onvilliers section and drove the Ger mans from some of their strongest positions. The French plans were brvlfliantw conceived fand executed without a hitch. Their objective was most difficult; a hilly range filled with deep caverns afforded shelter to hundreds of men and machine guns but the French infantry stormed the heights of Casque and Teton, respec tively 786 and 654 feet in height, and carried them with a rush while other columns captured the trenches lining the northern slopes of Mount Carnillet. The result of these operations gives the French a commanding view on their left. The value placed on the possession of these hills is shown bv the violence of the bociety Engagement Announced A Williston, S. C, special to the Columbia State of Monday con tains the announcement of the ap proaching marriage of Mr. M. Just as the clock struck nine Misses Ruth Wtiitener and Nina Ramseur softly sang 'The Owl and the Pussy Cat," and immediately following played the wedding march tunefully on tin cans. The procession was led by Russell Wfnfield Wlhitener, who offipiated at the mock ceremony, fol lowed by little Miss Margaret sis ter of the bride who bore the ring in a beautiful mullen stalk. Next came the flower girl, little Misses Rebecca Ramseur and Edith Shu ford. The six bridesmaids were Misses Ora and Rachel Hoover, An nie Mary and Lois Shuford and Bir die Hilton, who formed a semi-circle from the door to the arch. MALADY IN CATAWBA COUNTY BAFFLES THE PHYSICIANS MAY BUY FIRE TRUCK The aldermen Thursday night dis cussed informally the idea of buying a fire truck. Some time ago the sub ject was up and agents for the manu facturer were in town again Thurs day. The truck proposed would cost between $1,500 and $2,000 equipped with chemical engine, hose, etc., all ready for business. It is felt that the town should have this protection. The town has been playing in luck in escaping disastrous fires, but there is no reason to believe that it will always be fortunate in this respect The truck is needed, and its purchase ought to reduce insurance premiums but it is said no reduction would be secured JNNewton Enterprise. Newton May 22 A. malady that has baffled physicians as well as laymens has seized he entire family of seven children of Mr. and Mrs. Noah Marlowe, who moved from the Startown section of the cOonty this winter to the southern part of town; two children have died while another has been at the point of death; a fourth is quite ill and three others have been taken ill, all with the same symptoms. A well is sus pected and water has been sent away for analysis. An unusual pest of flies around a perfectly kept home and premises, is regarded as the' cause of the trouble also; and today it was reported that in a piece of woods across a field from the house, the dead and decayed bodies of five horses, a cow and a hog had been found. Most persons thereupon be lieved that these foul carcases had furnished the origin of the strange sickness and that the flies had trans mitted it to the home. Mr. Roosevelt's Enormous Casualties New York World. ,We regret to report that further casualties of investigation have re duced Mir. Roosevelt's all-conquering army from 180,000 to 871. No other troops in the war have sustained such enormous losses. Un der the fire of publicity, compan ips. regiments, even brigades, melt away without leaving a solitary sur vivor to ell the tale. "Thermoj plea had its messenger but the Ala mo had none" exclaimed Benton, and so it is likely to be with the Roos evelt army. The W,orld cannot agree, however, lwth those harsh and unsympathet ic critics who accuse Mr. Roosevelt having deliberately deceived the country as to the strength of his fa mous division which held up the army Kill in congress for nearly three weeks. 'Mr. Roosevelt has a 'fer vent and boyish imagination. He is capable of believing anything he wants to believe, and no doubt he convinced himself that he had 180, 000 men ready to start for France and take their places on the firing line. . , The fact that these men existed only on paper is lrrelvent, immate rial and unimportant. ,Mr. Roose velt's mind an instantly transform a paper soldier into a fiesh-and-blood soldier, equip him for war and hus tle him into the trenches before the breathless reporters for whom he has telephoned can reach his hotel. Wr is always a depressing bus iness, and if the Roosevelt army has contributed anything to the gayety of the nation, let us be grateful, for fhro will b doom enough when the real troops reach the front and the real casualties begin.
