Hickory Drug Company Amsterdam, July 5. The potato riots in which mobs that attacked two markets were dispersed by the police after fighting in which many persons were wounded, resulted from an attempt of the government to ship potatoes to England. Ihe anti ministrial Telecrraaf refers to the difficulty of making the less educated classes understand the necessity on the one har1 pf bartering potatoes for Herman coal and iron, and on the other hand, of the fulfilling the con tract with England which calls ior forwarding to that country an am ount of potatoes equivalent to that exported to Germany. The burgomaster states that cessa tion of exports to Germany would mean paralysis of industries wilh resultant lack of work and no coal next winter. The socialists de mand cessation of the exportation of all foods. The government is taking measures to bring adequate supplies from the rural districts and distri bute them at reduced prices. The REXALL Store Telephone 46 AMERICA IN THE WAR London Observer (June 10) Seldom has a great story opened more quietly than when Gen. Persh ing landed at Liverpool last Friday and found himself an accredited Am erican commander upon British soil. That in itself wa.s a circumstance to make history self-conscious. Gen. Pershing is a veteran of war, and has vindicated the Stars and Stripes against various of his country's ene mies. We may doubt whether in his bold:st flights of imagination or ambition it would have occurred to him that he might be the first to fling out the banner to the breezes of Europe the standard-bearer of Amer ica in the battle of all times. But significant events rush past us today like telegraph poles upon a railway journey. The strange and the ma jestic enroll themselves in the com mon place with scarcely the compli ment of an hour's wonder. The nu cleus of America's field army is trans ferred to Europe, and immediately we shall have begun to accept it as a matter of course and routine. "Dra matic effect" is lost where all background of the ordinary has pass ed away. We know that this landing of a few officers from the other side of the Atlantic stands for what it will afterwards burst volumes to ex press. Nothing could more forcibly bring home to us the actuality of our new ally than the arrival of this "mili tary mission." It is a most practi cal evidence of that forthcoming help which we value not less than the moral evolution which has made it possible. Even if they stood alone, we should not fail in appreciation of the new terms upon which the Briir ish and American peoples stand to one another. To have buried the evil md disinterred the good which was their common legacy; to have reach ed the good faith and zeal of 4ach ather's inspirations; to have found a ;ause whose harmonizing power could subdue all minor discord and promote cooperation for a conjoint m these were achievements that even yesterday seemed to lie in the pro vince of the mere idealist. But to ice the representatives of the Amer ican army here in our midst, along which millions of their countrymen may march to hazard and contest with our own, gives the true sense of blood brotherhood its pulsation. If puts a new coloring upon the news that America registered 10,000,000 f her citizens last week from whom !:o select her needful provision of ighting men. America starts, as we did, at the bottom of the military ladder. She is in every sense more of a beginner, thread of tradition never lost though from the lack of that thin but tough often obscured in the web of our English experience. What we know as certainly as if the fruition were already come that she will stand be side England and France in a pan oply of strength inferior to neither, that she will vie with them in the genius of war and that she will pour Ihe wealth of her spirit as well as :f her blood into a struggle that she .esteems no less fundamental than holy. That consummation will throw its heralding light upon every theatre of conflict, and redouble the issurance with which brave men :pend the present in order that others may reap the future. The knowledge that America is in the war to the ut most of her resources is all that those nations will ask which have spurnea ill reckoning from the beginning and are ready to endure to the uttermost end. None of us will expect too much too soon. A saving intervention will take time to develop its mili tary power. We shall follow with sympathy and understanding the ef forts of Gen. Pershing and hi3 col leagues, and, while too well versed in the conditions to look impatiently for the results, we shall be ready for more than one spur to admiration in the process by which the quick-moving, versatile and supremely prac tical genius of America vindicates it self in a new career. Above all, we shall not let our own exertions be relaxed by the knowledge that & Tood comrade, single-eyed and reso lute as ourselves, is getting ready to share them. The prospect of Ameri ca's help will increase the potency of every defender of liberty who is now in the f 'd. It will impart a steadier and more confident rhythm to the blov of freedom. And those nations over whom the night of cap tivity still hovers will keep their souls more steadfast because of the new hand that signs the promise of their deliverance. Ladies' Guild Meets The Ladies' Guild of Holy Trinity Lutheran church met on Tuesday af ternoon, July 3 at the home of Mrs. P. P. Suttlemeyer with 25members present. With Mrs. F. I.
