MUSIC IN WAR Milwaukee Journal If Germany cuts off our supply of German opera singers, we might re taliate by cutting off the supply of German street bands. ENCOURAGING TO THE ALLIES Columbia State. Remembering the German govern ment's ' pitiful plea when it aban doned claims to national honor by setting out upon its course of ruth- ess submarine warfare that it would bring the war to a speedy end, Admiral von Capelle's summing up that "there is not the least reas on for doubting the success of the submarine war," is heartening to the allies. Five months have passed since the German government began its dirty work and two or three months have passed since the war should have ended, according to the promises of the government controlled German newspapers to the German people. In March Capelle would have said, in ringing tones of affirmation, that the submarines are winning the war. Seeking refuge in a negative form of speech in July, he is content to deny that there is reason for doubting their success, thereby con ceding that doubt has begun to seep into the German mind. Meantime the German government's promises already have failed of realization. In a word, German expression of confidence in the submarines is perceptibly weakening in a measure that tends to confirm British ex pression of confidence that they are being defeated. It is observable, too, that while Capelle asserts that the number of German submarines increases stead ily, successful attacks upon fighting ships of the allies do not increase, although, in the transportation of commissions and of troops, the, latter have lately been on the open sea m expanded numbers. Destroyers are chasing the submarines and, appar ently, with safety. Meantime von Hindenburg points to the submarine as the German hope, telling the German armies that they have but to hold out while the submarines win the victory. An as tonishing confession from the lips oi a general acclaimed as a conqueror! It is at least plain that the Ger mans are Qualifying their boasts. Wjth Capelle denying the doubt of submarine victory and with Hiii- denburir admitting that victory oi land is not to be expected that the armies must but hold out the a lies were never so much justified in taking a hopeful view as they arc J Church Directory i Reformed Joseph L, Murphy, pastor. 11:00 Communion services. 3:30 Services in East Hickory. 7.15 C.
