C, under the act of March 8. 1879. ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS FRIDAY. JULY 1.1. 1!17 WHEN IT WILL END Wlu'ti will the war end? That ques tion i asked a million times a day, but there is only one answer when Germany is ready to yield its spoils, restore I'elgitim. Serbia and Ru mania, return Alsace-Lorraine to France :nul pay all these countries for the terrors their people have suf fered. German people were told that, the U-boats would win the war in a few months the first of May was the date fixed by common consent and now these same people are told to hold on n little nger. The U-boat M the trump card of the German government. Its failure to win the war will leave the kaiser nothing else to play, since all the little coun tries have been overrun and there are no more glorious victories to feed the populace on. Even a government that now con descends to despise the efforts of the United States will hestitate to start a new year with worse prospects than now face it of victory. We be lieve the kaiser will call for peace and call in an unmistakable man ner before a new offensive can be started in the spring. This belief of course is based on the assumption that the United States will continue to arm and to prepare for the conflict. Otherwise, the war will drag cn another year or more. JUDGE CARTER IN COURT Judge Frank Carter is improving an already fine reputation as a pre siding officer at Newton this week, according to reports brought to Hick ory by lawyers and others attending superior court. 1 1 is charge to the grand jury Monday was said to lie an unusually fine effort, approach in gj a eUissio, it ml 3 judgments have been rendered since then with a view solely to serving the common weal. Judge Carter is admittedly one of the most intellectual members of the state judiciary and his writings show flashes of genius A voracious read er, he probably knows as much about the war ns any one of a dozen men in the state , and has tho faculty f explaining its causes and objects in a maner that secures the atten tion and holds the interest. II is charge to the grand jury con tained references to tho war and the kaiser, and these were appeals to the patriotism and common sense of those in the court room. Tt is a pity that the judge could not bo heard in Hickory on the war. He could rekindle the patriotism of even those persons in whom the fire has never died. Mr. J. F. Abernothy always raises fcime fine corn on his land in Hick ory and it is so good this year that he promises to take a lantern and the Record man through it some day. From all accounts it is real corn. Catawba and Caldwell commission ers having reached an agreement and there being little question of Prompt action on the part of the Ca tawba and Alexander boards, th bridge question in this section is in a fair way to be settled properly soon. .Already more than 40,000 automo biles have been registered by the secretary of state and tho machines are being numbered at the rate of 300 a ay North Carona S(icms uesiincd to have 50,000 automobiles this year. As long us there nr firmiff i - i'iM" tumut'N for malcontents to hold office at the expense or the general good, the Irish home rule problem never' will be solved. The Russians seem able to produce any number of heroes, though the foremost just now are Kerensky, Brussiloff and Komiloff. Those fine showers a month ago faded to spoil a lot of small potatoes, the Karden expert of the Record in forms us. If the farmers of this section do not have full dinner pails this win- trr' au 8,ns will go by the board. NAMED AS MK.MHKKH COUNTY DEFENSE COUNCIL Mr. .7. Y.
