C, under the act of March I, 187. ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS TUESDAY, JULY 24, 1917 EMBARGO STROG WEAPON The announcement of Herr Erzber- ger in the reichstag that the higi. German comunand 'expected to ob tain enough supplies from the Uniu ed States through the neutral coun tries of Europe to supplement those produced within the empire it self serves merely to make Presi dent Wiilsons position all the stron ger. The president's embargo was designed to prevent the enemy from obtaining supplies ffm the United States and it seems to have hit a vulnerable spot. The high German command, how ever, knew the supplies it would re quire from neutrals when war was declared, and the kaiser and his associates dependea on nfiutral gov ernments to block England in Its efforts to prevent the illegal expor tation of foodstuffs and munitions to the central poweTs. It Is not likely that Germany counted on the United States takinsr steps to chock trading with ttie enemy, for it must be remembered that Ger man writers, with few exceptions, have held Americans up as a nation of traders, desirous of making money regardless of the cost. President Wilson and the Amer ican nation have shown that sacri fices can be made in this country, that the people are willing to pass up a few million dollars and that they will fight vigorously with all the lawful weapons at their com mand. General von Bernhardt discuss ed the psychology cm the blockade trals Vould make" it"easyYor Tfe"r many to get supplies. If Holland, Denmark and Sweden should place an embargo on products well, these little countries were close by, and the German army knew how to deal with them. The United States never entered the calculations of the bold men who were to carve a larger place in the sun for German kulture and expansion. The American embargo, as the Record pointed out some time ago, is worth many army corps to the forces of democracy. SAVE THE FOOD iln a letter to the Record, Secretary Houston of tho department of agri culture urges the necessity of im- pressing on everybody the necessity for saving all foodstuffs possible this summer. The mere fact that there is plenty in the country today is no indication that in six months there won't be a shortage of many things necessary to the comfort of the American people. The farmers of this country have enlisted in the war against Germany just as wholeheartedly as any other class of Americans, but everybody must help to save. Wlheat is sell ing here now at $2.50 a bushel owing to tho food bill, and the American farmers will be guaranteed a mini mum of $2. Heretofore they havi sold cheap while the speculator walked off with tho profits. With the passage of the ood bill there in more reason for saving, because spec ulators will not be allowed to pro duce a condition that will impe farmers to sell. lit is most too lae now to plant many inings Tor winter use, but those things that have been wooed M i . . . . irom ine soil should be preserved Thev will mean nuinou tn. - - . . . w . . j vv Mig 'I u- ducers later on and contentment to ine great host who are compelled to I buy everything that goes on the ta ble. Arthur Brisbane, reputed the best f i . . . paiu editor in the United States gives Secretary Daniels just praise for his aIimIm!.!..!! a iiiMiiairttuon oi ine navy. The irutn is that Mr. Daniels views of morality as those of tho American fathers and mothers, and parents, as Mr. Brisbane says, are not afraid to am4J..X it .... cHip-iw meir men in his keeping. mere may do scoffers still, but we'll wager that the next secretary of the navy and the next after him will not change Mir. Daniels' policies. Durham has made the most noise of any town in the state so far, and the noise was of a kind to return like an echo. SERVING ITS PATRONS i Friends of the Record have not done thanking it for for the manner in which it furnished the names of those drawn Friday and readers here and elsewhere declare they do not know what they would have done without the Record. They probably would have made up a purse of $25 nr $30 and had the numbers come by wire after they had been posted on . mi bulletin boards in other cities. ine Rppord saved this expense and also the big job of placing the numbers before the names. The registrants had already been published. The Record furnished the informa tion to its Newton friends, the Freeze Drug Company being the dispenser of the warm tidings there, and New ton went to the aid of Lincolnton. The numbers in the Record were good all over the state, and Lenoir and Granite Falls had the information Friday night. North Carolina newspapers had never done anything on such a big scale before, but all rose to the emergency. The afternoon papers as usual scored a big hit. The Rec ord appreciates what its friends say of its efforts, and it is taking this oc casion more to assure them that it is there to serve than to call attention to any credit that may be due it. iBeverly S. Royster, of Oxfrod, who was called an outlander by Durham folks, has been given a commission in a New Bern company 'and we will treat you so good that you'll forget that Durham crowd," the New Bern officer recommending the ap pointment. iWle are hopeful of Russia's stick ing. Kerensky is a wonderful man and since he is clothed with unlim ited power he undoubtedly will see to It that the traitors get what is coming to them.
