JULY 27, 7917 RACKING OUR MEN The activities which Hickory peo ple see on the streets these days are common in every town and city in the United States where a national jtianl unit has its headquarters. Men are tlrillinu" everywhere and the i'tmosphcre is of war. The period of preparation for the recruits, un less they are sandwiched in nmontf veterans, will he lon;r and tedious, hut it will he thorough- Although there still arc people hopeful that the worst despotism in modern history will win over these brave hoys, it can ho said truthfully that there is more unanimity in the Unite. 1 States in the prosecution of this war than was the case in any other. This is due to the fact that the Germans perpetrated so many senseles.N outrages, as the violation of r.elji'ium, the sinking of tlv Lus itania, the shootintr of Edith Cavell and the ruthless destruction of Am erican lives and ships. Whereas in the war of 1812, a few New Fnirlnnd states wanted to secede, and whereas in the War be tween the States riots and other dis turhances were frequent in the north, there has been no major opposition to the cause which the president and the jrreat body of Americrii. people have espouse wholehearted ly. .This is as it should he. If the country is not united behind these younsr men, two will he lost where only one would he offered as a sacrifice on the altar of free dom. Papers reaching this desk from every section of the state show that North Carolinians are behind ever effort to prove their interest in the young men who are willing to make the supreme sacrifice. The least we can do, as we look on the brave, young faces, is to resolve to do our utmost for them. We should prtiy 1hat the hearts of the Gorman peo ple will he changed, but in the mean time we should form a strong re serve behind our own youth. MUST LOOK AHEAD The Russian situation from the first did not appear hopeful to us, but we were mighty glad to have our opinion seemingly discredited. It now appears that probably Ilrussi loff's offensive was begun too early, that known rotten regiments h:ul not been removed from the line, and that the period necessary for the solditrs to learn of the dangers from Gci many was not long enough. Tho forces of react ion are now turn in to Kerensky and are giv:(g him their support in an effort to prevent a calamity that many Russian states men foresaw. Hut we need run rail nt the Russians; that will do no good. VV'e should rather hope tha. they will hp able to pull themselves together by fall and be ready for the final overthrow of the German military power in the spring. Mr. I). I). Whisnant of route T, who frequently calls by in the after noon to get his paper, had an experi ence Thursday that ig without a par allel. Mis horse, in reaching out for some grass on tho sidewalk, draw the light dray against the Re cord's delivery cart and then broke and ran. Tho cart went before the drny and beside tho horse for a dis tance of a hundred yards before the animal was stopped. Not a cent of damage was done. HUE PREMIUM LIST The premium list of the Catawba County Fair is ready for distribution and the booklets, just from the press es of the Clay Printing Company, may be obtained by calling on Secre tary Peaton or other officers of the association. - The premium list, which is more pretentious than ever before, will appeal especially to growers of livestock, as well as th producers of food supplies. No part of the farm or home has been neglected in the preparation of premiums. The list contains 32 pages and covers and should be called for promptly in order that exhibitors may begin preparing for tho fair. The Catawba Sweet Potato Grow ers Association will meet here Sat urday afternoon at 1:.0 to sec just what they can do in the way of fur nishing spuds and other foodstuffs to the country. Why blame the Russians ns long as congress plays into the enemy's hands? GERMAN TREATMENT OF IRISH Skihbereen Letter in the Cardiff Times. A few days ago the crew of the St. Rridgot ' were busily at work, when they saw a long gray hull ris ing from tho sea about a mile away. It was a German submarine. It bore quickly down upon the St. I'.ridget, anil whiist it was still 200 yard's a Way the uommand "Hands up!" was shouted from the deck. Half .lazed and frightened Michael O' Klaheriy and his iv.cn hesitated. Then ride shots rang out over the waters and little Pasty Flaherty fell woun )cd. In a few minutes the submarine was along-side and several of her crow came on board the St. Bridget armed to the teeth. Fishing baskets, lish, spillor lines and sails were quickly thrown overboard a few blows of a sledge hammer smashed the errir' to fragments and then, having piio I graphed their handi work, the pirates decamped, carry ing with them all the parafflm and white bread they found on board. Dazed and broken, Michael O'Flaherty and his men were ordered to make fast to the submarine, and towed to ward a mackerel boat, which the sub marine sank with a bomb. Having picked up their comrades in misfor tune, Michael and his crew pulled the long, miles back to Mullin Cove. FRANCE Chicago Herald. On the stage of the world France is the star actress at present. We said actress, not actor. She is al ways La Delle France. Now, why is "that? The great virtues of the French nation are economy, enthu siasm and endurance not one of them principally feminine. And vet not only her own soldiers, but our young men also die for her on tho firing line, not like martyrs, but like lovers for their sweetheart. England inspires no such sentiment. We respect England. England is the heavy father of the current drama. But France is the leading lady.
