C, under the act oz juarcn J, J 879. ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS THURSDAY, AUG. 2, 1917 SOME FINE CORN Ten acres of corn which every body says is the best ho ever saw is being grown by Mr. J. F. Aber nethy on his place beyond Oak wood cemetery. The land, which was in crimson clover, was planted May 30 and is a little over two months old. It will yield on an av erage from 75 to 100 bushels an acre, and it has cost him so far $108. It ought to yield 1,000 bushels, and it will if the seasons continue favorable. iMr. Abernethy will sow crimson clover between the rows in a few days and then await results. He mad" $200 worth of hay from this land last spring, and the stand was poor except on two acres. If the season had been good, this crop would have netted him at least $400. IMany good farmers have inspect ed this 10-acre tract of corn and all agree that it gives promise of be ing the best raised this year or in any season. Just above this tract the city has more than an acre and it too is magnificent. Editor Frank Stroud of the Mocksville Record is bragging about his corn and beans, as if man lives on them alone, but he really ought to see the garden he was so sorry over a few months ago. It is yielding roasting ears, okra, beans, potatoes, butter beans, cucumbers, onions and tomatoes in abundance, with the promise of a bountiful sup ply of late cornfield beans and pecs, sweet potatoes, turnips and other vegetables. Besides being a de light to its owner, it has cut the grocery bill considerably; and the owner is not grieving about it. Department of justice agents will come to North Carolina to investi gate the alleged treasonable remarks of Dr. H. Q. Alexander, president of the tate Farmers' Union. Bt it said here that the loquacious doctor never represents the majority "of the members in his organization, the great bulk of whom are level headed and, although unable to spout like a midway spieler, capa ble of doing some first rate think ing. It might be foolishness to molest the sage of Matthew. With the passage by the senate, 65 to 20, of a resolution to submit to the states the qu(stion of a consti tutional amendment to prohibit the manufacture of liquor, the matter is put up to the house, where the lea ders believe they can command the necessary two-thirds' majority. There ought to be enough states in terested to make prohibition the ot. ganic law of the land. The states are asked to ratify the amendment In six years. The report of Admiral Cleaves will result in silencing those wise acres who insisted that the story given out in Washington on the night of July 3 by Secretary Daniels was false. German submarines did attack the American transports bound for France and Admiral Cleaves saysi one U-boat was sunk. A great deal of fun was poked at the sec retary by the scoffers, but they will have a chance to hedge and it will be unlike them if they do not seize it. The navy authorities should be considerate of Willis R. Taylor, an enlisted man in the navy who re cently deserted and joined the army in order to be sure of getting into action against the Germans. Such a desire should be gratified if pos sible, and here's hoping tfhat the young man will not lose his standing as the result of his breach of honor. The administration food control bill, with those features eliminated which were obnoxious to the presi dent, has Wen agreed to by senate and house conferees and will bo passed soon and become law with the president's signature. The measure will come a month late, but will do good. Yesterday was the third anniver sary of the declaration of war by Cermany on Russia, as everybody must have said, on reading the squib in this paper to the contrary. "BUFFALO . BILL" AT HUB SATURDAY ciirturinCT is nn 'eve-witness descrip tion of the duel with knives be tween Col. William r . Joay, ui 1a nnn and Yellow Hand, chief of the Sioux Indians, which is ac curately pictured in fcssanys cur rent feature, Advenftiifres of Buffalo Bill," which is featured at the Hub Saturday, August 4th. The eye-witness was H. H. Cross, cele brated painter of Indians and ani mals. He is now 8q years old "On July 18, 1876, at Hot Crek, near Fort Robinson, Dakotas," said Mr. Cross, "Buffalo Bill, guiding Gen. Eugene A. Carr and a detach ment of United States troops drew up against the Sioux hordes. Yel low Hand, riding a yellow pony, rode out upon the crest of a high buttle and signaled a bold chall enge to Colonel Cody, whom he knew, to settle the difficulties by fighting a duel. Before anybody could stop him Colonel Cody dashed out to meet the chief "Between the lines of soldiers and Indians the duel was fought Cody fired the first bullet which clipped a feather out of Yellow Hands' war bonnet. Shot after shot was exchanged, and finally the men, their ammunition exhausted, leaped from their horses and clashed with knives. Five minutes of fighting and Colonel Cody drove his knife into the Indians' heart. "Next day Yellow Hand's squaw went over to the soldiers' quarters and in the presence of the officers she cut off the third finger of her right hand. That was the supreme sacrifice act of a great chief's wid ow." HAIR HINTS Helpful Advice for Care of the Hair Worthy the Attention of Kveryone Who Would Avoid DandrufT, Iitching Scalp, Gray Hair and Baldness. If your hair is geting thin and you are troubled with dandruff or itch ing scalp, get four ounces of Pari sian sage from your druggist. This helps to prevent baldness and gray ness and keeps the scalp clean. "Before going to bed I rub a little Parisian sage into my scalp," says a woman whose luxurious, soft and fluffy hair is greatly admired. This keeps the hair from falling out and makes it easy to dress attractively. Everyone knows sage is good for the hair, but be sure to get Parisian sage (Giroux's), for this brand will not stain the hair and is delicately perfumed. Hickory Drug Co can sup ply you.
