To care for the surplus vegetables in many cases requires nothing more than the use of existing facilities in or near the home. Often the vegetables from a small garden may be stored with no out lay of money. When considerable quantities of vegetables are grown, it is frequently advisaible to construct permanent stor age facilities in the form of a storage room in the basement of the dwelling or under an outbuilding or to build an rtntAnnr pl1r nf wnod or mawsiwv. If permanent facilities are notH available the root crops can be kept! in outdoor pits or banks, requiring no cash outlay except for labor. Every one will remember the story in "Robison Crusoe" of how a ship was wrecked on a reef off the island, and Crusoe, after many attempts, succeeded in reaching it; how he made his way around the ship, seeing what he could find that might be useful to him, and finally came across a great chest full of gold piec es: how he took up the pieces, let ting them fall through his hana, with the dull recollection of how ut terly valueless they were to him, sit uated as he was. This story very aptly sums jip the position of Norway, as brought out in a recent statement made by Mr. Thome Hoist, the well-known Nor wegian commercial and industrial au thority. iMar. Hoist pointed out that whilst it is undeniable that Norway through her incnfcsed trade and man ufactures, has been accumulating money, nevertheless she has not been accumulating wealth. Money, as such, he verv iustlv insists, is not wealth; and the cost of living has in creased to such an extent in Nor wav as in practically every othe countrv throughout the world, that very many of the people, far from being better off, are really worse off than they were before the war. Of course, the present conditions havt. dealt most hardly with those people who have fixed incomes, and when the present cost of food, clothing ,and fuel is taken into consideration, it is seen how serious their position must be. Aa is inevitable at such times, the inequality in the distribution of wealth in Norway has been steadily increasing with every month of the war, and, as Mr. Hoht points out, it is becoming daily more evident that vast accumulations are, in many cas es, coming into the wrong hands. This is, in a measure, the kernel of the difficulty. The one reassuring feature of the whole situation is that this increase in Norway's trade is not entirely due to the war. For some time past, the country has been steadily pros nerine in this direction. Thus the value of Norwegian exports alone in creased from 58.500,000 crowns m 1904. to 181.500.000 crowns in 1913, showing an increase of over 309 per cent in nine years. The conditions which nroduced this prosperity are not likely to be permanently impair ed by the war, and in spite of all her present difficulties, given wisdom and restraint amongst her statesmen and commercial leaders, the future of the country need occasion no un due concern. iSave late Irish potatoes by storing them in a room in the cellar, or in an outdoor storage bank or pit. Wjhen stored in cellars, the potatoes may be put into barrels, boxes, bas kets, prates, bins or on the floor, but must t protected from the light. Select a well-drained location, maka a shallow excavation, about 6 inches deep, line it with straw, hay, leaves, or jsimilar material, and place the po tatoes in ft conical pile on the lin ing. Make the bottom of the pile about the saw size as, but not lar ger than, the bottom of the excava tion. Cover the potatoes with the same material as that used for lining the ibottoia of the pit and carry it up several jcfc3 above the apex of the pile of yftgejbles, having it extend through tfee $jtft covering. This serves as yntSatig flue, and it should be covered mik $ece of tin or a short board as a frofejn0$ from wind. 'The dirt covering should fee 2 or S inches thick when the vegetables are stord, and it should be increased as severely old weather approaches un til it is a iogt or more in thickness, or suffifcient to protect from freezing. In finishing the pit, be dirt should be firmed with the bacfc Q the shovel in order to make it as neairiy water proof as possible. Ha? shallow trench around th base f the pit should have an outlet for (earring off the water. Supple meialt (fche covering with manure, strav, corn fodder, or other protective material. Use several small pits in stead of one large oe, as vegetables keep better in small pits, and the en tire contents can be removed when the pit is opened. (For more detaled information on the storage of potatoes, write for farmers' bulletins 847 and 879, U. S. department of agriculture, Washing ton, D. C. Thompson-West . Company f "The Ladies' Store."
