MEMBER OF ASSOCIATED PRESS The Associated Press is exclusively entitled to the use for republication of all news credited to it or not credited in this paper and also th local news published herein. FRIDAY, AUfi. 24, 1917 HARD ON SUFFS Wte are not as gallant as Editor Gray of the Raleigh Times and therefore not as sympathetic towards the wo man's party pickets, but we do pro test most bitterly at the outrage im posed on the several prisoners by the Washington police. Any resent ment we may have felt against the girls for flaunting those ugly and seditious banners in front of the white house melts away in the lat August sun in the face of the cha grin caused by the inconsiderate ac tion of the custodians of these Dol lies and Flossies who are battling for liberty in the cells at Washing ton. We appeal to the federal gov ernment to abate the outrage, to punish the police, to hang them if necessary. The ladies are not complaining at being dressed like other violators of the law, they have no grievance against the food, the beds and other discomforts of prison vile. But the order of the police forbid ding the imprisoned pickets to be in terviewed by the newspaper report ers, is otrageous, and as is resente. by them as a cruel blow. Mercy must these brave women who have left their husbands and babes to the tender mercies of the casual sc vants be denied the alienable right to give interviews to the Washing ton newspapers? In the name of Patrick Henry, forbid it. IF WORST OCCURS Americans who read news pa pcrs know what the German govern ment, through its agencies, was able to do in the Unil:d States. The plotB hatched out in this country are an old story, even the effort to in duce Mexico and Japan to attacl- the United States being stale. If the Germans were able to do so much devilment in the Uniteo States, where the people were pos tively hostile to them, it readily can realized how much more mischief they can do in a country which has boon under German influence for years where there is an element bent on having the autocracy restored ro gardless of consequences and where the provisional government is nam ing all it can do to exist in the fact of Socialism and other dreamers. Nobody knows what will happen vi Russia. Anything might happen That country may be bathed in its own blood before order is restored and it may pass under the complete domination of the Hohenzollerns. TV outlook is not rosy. There is u. chance of making Russia fight for tho central powers, but there is danger that. Russia will be rendered impotent to fight at all. In such an event, Germany will not be interested in the pope's peace t fTorts, and the Job undertaken by the allies will be all the greater. SPOKEN LIKE AN AMERICAN Louis N. Hammerling, presides, of the National Association of For eign Language Newspapers, ans wered the National Security League as follows: M'I congratulate you on the spleu did manner in which you addressed the editors of the German newspa pers printed in America. I belie ve this should have been done last April or three years ago., I eai. not see, for the life of me, why the German newspapers printed in the United States should be anything eke but Americans. The Germans who come here to make this country then home, and the ones who were born here, certainly should have it as their country. The Germans should be the ones who live in Germany. T same thing should apply to ever other race, and whoever is he it should be American, first, last and all tho time." Mr. Hammerling takes a positicft that a good many persons whose an cestors came here many years ago might imitate. Most Americans will wonder why the Dutch government stands for the indignities imposed on it by the Ger man government, but it must be borne in mind that the Dutch frontier is vulnerable and the Hollanders have had plenty of examples of a br.ive people fighting for their rights. In at least two places the Netherlands could be attacked and the country overrun, and when the Germans mck" a threat, as they have done in th-. case of requiring the use of Dutch ships five years after the close of the war, they usually back that throat up with a shift of an army corps or two to the Dutch frontier. Charlotte will not miss its sol diers, as Washington specials would indicate. The war department an nounced that troops from the norti. west would be sent there for train ing, although the New England sol diers are to leave soon for France. vMV, bpecial at the HUB THEATRE Saturday Aug. 25 Gladys Hulette -IN s U R NEW YORK" EX a A GOLD ROOSTER PLAY IN 5 PARTS Admission 5 and 1 0 Cents. a n a a R a 13 ES a El a ES a a a El a a a ES H El m a D El El "4 Professional Cards msxtttmtmzt Dr. W. Miss Beatrice Cobb of Morganto and Mts. J. G. Boylin of WadesborD, are conspicuous examples of women who have made a success of the news paper game in North Carolina. An otner woman writer, Miss Susan Y. Iden of the Raleigh Times, probably is the best reporter ever graduated in this state. Miss Iden knows the game from A to Z and can handle a wedding or a political convention with ease. The Columbia State, mindful of the fact that many officers will desire to bring their wives there during the encampment, urges Columbia house keepers not to skin the visitors. Co lumbia will emerge from this war with a reputation, and the kind it will be depends on the people of Columbia .Governor Manning of South Car olina has four sons in the army which is in sharp contrast to a for mer governor of South Carolina, who h doing everything in his power to hinder the government. Those farmers who are holding for $5 wheat may have to sell for $2, a price that, before the war and high prices in everything, would have made them grin. ;Roosevelt is the same militant Ted dy, lie urges Police Commissioner Woods of New York to throw the hooks into the anti-drafters that in fest that big town. The fair is just a little more th.i,. a month away. It will be the best in the history of the association. The weather man might have heart for the late gardens. SOLDIERS DRINK TEA IN PLACE OF LIQUOR London, Aug. 24 "Has it been no ticed that since the anti-treating epoch and since alcoholic liquor came to vanishing point, men invite oup another to cups of tea and get quite feverish over their potations" asks the Daily Express. "Yesterday at ternoon an actor who is 'resting' confessed that he had consumed nine cups of tea since breakfast time. They had certainly changed his con dition. He was terribly restless. Glittering eyes, rapid, nonsensical vol uminous talk, high temperature, an uncertain temper, a fluctuating uulse, hands nervously clenched all these are the signs and tokens of tea drunkedness."
