SATURDAY SEPT 1, 1917 PEACE IN 1918 t Frank II. Simonds, regarded ru the foremost military critic in the coun try, believes that tho war will come to an end in 1918. He is of the opm. ion that Berlin will strive all win tcr to secure peace by negotiation hoping thereby to avoid battled in the spring that will spell disaster to German hopes of conquest. Air Simonds reminds the readers of the American Review of Reviews of the fact that, whereas Germany appears strong, it is not powerful enougn to wrest territory from tho western en emies, and that the Hindenburg i mies are being driven back slowly tmf surely. Even the Russian collapse has no saved the Germans. They have tak en thousands of men w and many big guns from the eastern theatre, bu still have been unequal to the su perior number and equipment of 'the allies in the west. Mr. Simond tc.'l Americans not to become discouraged at what apparently is a slow process he does not even believe that the allies will make the big drive until nex year, but he points out that the FrnnMi nnA Tiritish everywhere are on the offensive and that the Germans in spite of desperate counter attacks are being forced back every day. Record readers will recall that thi paper has ventured the opinion that the war will be over by spring, pro vided tho allies continue their prepa rations. We are almost confident the German government, which is no deceived as to the power of its ere mies, will be willing to make almos any sort of peace rather than face the consequences of an offensive by the combined armies of the allies Jn the west, together with a major op eration by the rejuvenated Russians The Berlin war party has been fa vored with good luck, but the day o reckoning is near. Those western pacifists and pro Germans who are having trouble i securing a hall for their meeting will receive better consideration in Washington. As a matter of jus tice they should be permitted to as semble and discuss anything, thoug the wisdom of anti-American talk is questionable, and we hope they won' check more than four tons of bricks. Hickory friends of Dr. Simon Te ter Long, the eminent Lutheran di vine, will be glad to welcome him here September 25 when he comes to help Lenoir College celebrate the closing of the endowment cam paign and the quadricentertnial of the Protestant Reformation. Tho occasion will be notable all arounu. DDODDDDBInDDBIDBBI9QQSI3DQOBDDSDQQ!SE!OI!BSI ''MYSTERY ? DOUBLE CROSS" g nuniwi'inniiiiiiiimiiniiiiinTTW Professional Cards Ilerr Hardwick's bill prohibiting the sending of drafted men to France eceived no consideration from the Americans on the senate military at- fairs committee. Judge Boyd 'has held the federal child labor law unconstitutional, but he odd3 are 20 to 1 that he will be overruled by the United States su preme court, before which the appeal from his decision will be taken. The Newton Enterprise says that nine young men who have been train ed in its office are serving their coun try and none of them has offered an objection to being sent to France. We are constrained to observe that good many men of military agv would not be adverse to serving the government in an advisory capacity. n ci Nearly four inches of rain landed here Thursday night and landed hard. rrobably that South Mountain light is white iigntning. Concord, Sept. 1. Miss Leora Ritchie of Charlotte is in the loca. hospital with a broken rib and col lar bone, the result of an auto av eident that happened about one mi; north of Concord shortly after 6 p m. Friday. Vance Miller of Chin, drove, who was driving the machine, also sustained a fractured collar bone. 'Mr. Miller and Misses Margaret Asbury and Lenora Ritchie of Charlotte, and Miss Myrtle Kitchie and Max Ritchie of China Grove, were coming toward Concord. Just before reaching Concord they met a Ford driven by a negro. As the p,in anproached each other the ne gro drove his car to the left and in front of the urani maenme n is said. The latter was forced to turn sharply to the left to avoid a collis ion and the sudden strain caused one of the rear wheels of the Grant car to give away. The machine turned over, throwing the occupants out. The other three occupants of the car suffered only slightly from minor cuts and bruises.
