B. Coun cill, who became ill in Asheville several days ago, was somewhat Im proved today. iHe is able to sit up in bed and it is hoped to bring him home in a few days. Brig. Gen. Eli B. Hoyle, U. S. A., who has been called from retirement to take command of the department of the east, ;is a second cousin of Mrs. E. L. Shuford of Hickory, with whom the General and Mrs. Hoyle visited last year. General Hoyle was reared by Mrs. E. L. Shuford's father the late E. L. Shuford on his plantation in Alabama. Mr. Shuford was a great uncle of Gener al Hoyle and adopted and reared him after the death of his parents. The Charjotte Observer's Daily Reminder column contains the fol lowing on General Hoyle: "Brigadier General Hoyle, U. S. A., who has been called from retirement of the east, has often been pointed to as an ideal American soldier. He was born at Canton, Ga., sixty-six years ago and in his sixty-fourth year was retired for ar "Hp o-rrl uated from Wiest Point in 1875 and from the artillery school in 1880. In the war with Spain he served as chief oranance omtftcer ot volunteers. La ter he saw active service in the Phil ippines. Gen. Hoyle married the daughter of a United States army officer, the late Gen. R. E. DeRussy. He has a son and four sons-in-law who are captains in the army and his brother-in-law it. Gen.
