TUESDAY, SEPT. 11. TWO YEARS OLD TODAY W,ith this issue, providing we can make it, the Record will have begun the third year of its career. As this was written Monday night there was hopo that the linotype pot would be put in running order after a break down almost on the eve of the second anniversary of the paper. Re gardless of this trouble,, however, the paper will appear in modified form, thanks to the kindness of friends here and at Nt-wton. The Record was born on September 11, 1915. Y; had intended tiling our rea dcrs of the second year of the Rec ord, but they know almost a3 much about it as we do Considering the higher cost of everything of which a newspaper is made, paper in par ticular, the year has been a success No money ha3 been made, but the pa per has grown in circulation and in the goodwill of the pcoplo of large community in and around Hickory. Although the paper has not made any mechanical improvements in the two years of its existence, it has be come a better newspaper. Ai members of the staff are more accus tomed to their work, the editor has become more familiar with the neecia of this community, and can speak with more understanding than he could a year ago. mat the paper has been appreciated is attested by the increased circulation and the lib eral advertising patronage The character of the Record should be well known by this time. It i3 here to 3crvo Hickory, Catawba county and this section and to do its part in the wholesome development of this section of North Carolina. a a a a a a a . t 1 1 1- 4-V n raiue people mrougnuui. iuc ere interested in the an- ounccmeni inai me uisuucuw he United States, thanks to the food control law, stopped the maunfac- turc of whiskeys and liquors for be verage purposes Saturday night at 1 o'clock Wlhiskey still wril De sold, but it is unlikely that its man ufacture will ever be resumed lawful- y in the United States again. While we once more remind you that the chief value of a savings account is not so much in the actual amount saved desirable as that may be. The real gain lies in the fact that you are fostering the saving habit. You are making of yourself an empire builder - - - constructing your own little er ipire of safety and independence for the future Isn't That Worth While? HELPING US OUT 'The Record acknowledges assis tance extended to it during its troubles with the linotype pot. The Newton Enterprise, which was due to bo published Monday afternoon, al lowed us the use of its machine, and Operator Edgar Lytle went down at noon and banged up several gallics of type. Mr. J. L. Riddle lent us his big, swift Buick and James Whitener carried the editor and his late copy to Nowton, waited for us there and returned so that we could make part of the mail3. Harvey Wilfong was commandeered and he carried the Newton papers to James Andrew, who delivered them almost on time. The Cranite Falls and Lenoir packages were delivered as usual. The Hick ory Garage furnished a car for Mr Lytlo Hickory customers were an hour or more late in getting their papers, but it could not be helped. Mr. Joe Sharp assisted in putting the machine in condition and the whole force worked diligently under disadvantages. To Editor .Williams and Mr. Riddle the Record is deeply ihdebtcd. The Russian situation is no worse than it was a few months ago. It is remarkable that the hard-pressed provisional government has not giv en up the ghost and sought peace on any sort of terms' Almost any oth er nation would have don it. In other words the German charge at Buenos Aires, using the Swedish legation as the means of transmission, advised its government to talk sweet to Argentine and leave not a trace of the vessels or men on them. It appears that the Italians are hold up for the time being in their campaign for Triest. An army that overcame the obstacles that con fronted it during the long and tedi ous climbs up the mountains will not be stopped by another peak. "Mr. Joe Sharp, Linotype Hero," was the first nine cast on the Mer. gcnthaler after it was repaired. And that's tho way the bunch felt. Bweden is playing about as sorry a part in this war as any country could play. i NOTICE OF SALE OF BONDS Notice is hereby given that the Board of Commissioners of Cataw ba County, North Carolina, will re ceive sealed bids at the oihee ol the Register of Deeds, in the town of Newton, Catawba county, North Car olina, on the 12th day of September 1917, at twelve o'clock, noon, for tho purchase of one hundred thous and (100,000.00) dollars Catawba County.
