NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNERS Magnificent Production of Education al value at Thompson-V est Cos Store Taken in Japan and United States 'Silk in its finished state is an ideal product. It is at once durable, magnificent to the eye, tender to the touch, anu its rustle is soft music to the ears. Hence it is easy to understand why the silkworm, from the earliest times, has been the object of much consideration and concern from commercial and' industrial point of view. It is said that in this country ai one we annually expend as much for silk goods as we do for public edu cation, and thirty times as much as we do for foreign missions. An indomitable producer of wealth is the silkworm and a producer of wealth it has been from an age as remote as when Joseph was down in old Egypt interpreting the dreams of King Pharoah's butler and baker and later that of the king himself. According to Chinese authority,, the use of silk dates from 2650 B. C. and it is generally conceded that, in tht point of age. it stands midway aii.. ong the great textiles, wool and cot ton having preceded it, while flax, hemp and other fibrous plants follow ed shortly in its train. The first patron of the silkworm was Hoang-Ti, Third Emperor of China, and his Empress bi-Long-Chi, was the first practical silkworm breeder and silk reeler. It is related of her that she was once walking in the palace gardens when she discovered a strange and repulsive looking worm. It was small, of a pale green color, and was feedinig greedily on a mulberry leaf. (She interested the emperor m this stranee creature, and, at the Em peror's suggestion, took the fine silk en web which the worm finally spun, and was the first to successfully ree the new filment and weave it into cloth. So beneficial to the nation was hei work, considered that her gratified .subjects bestowned upon her the di vine title of "Goddess ot silk worms," and to this day the Chinese celebrate in her honor the "Con Con"" feast, which takes place during the season in which the silkworm eggs are hatched. The wonderful hand-icc$ored mo tion picture, which will be shown at Thompson-West Co.'s store next Mon day, Tuesday, Wednesday, both morn ing and afternoon, will illustrate the siik industry as it is today. 'The first part of the film shows the industry in .Taoan. with the dainty silkweaving worms, shown on the screen and the growth ot the worms is easily noticeable, thanks to the "close ud" nhotoerrapher. The meth od of feedng and the habits of the precious silk weavers is very notice: abler ." The manner in which the silk co coon is spun, first one complete lay er of fibre then a second, the deft fingers of the Japaneses girls sepa rating the grades of silk and winding them on huge spools operated by crude wooden macninery, give, you a splendid insight into the method ot manufacturing silk m the east.
