Long lines of university students in uniform fil ing out to the Emerson athletic field at 8 o'clock each morning now afford striking evidence of the interest that is being taken from the start of the new courses in military training at the university. Close to 500 stu dents are now taking the training. The arrival of Capt. J. Stuart Allen has served to put new life into the corps and the drills have been enter ed upon with much zest. This week Captain Allen has been giving vivid pictures in his lectures of actual fighting conditions on the western front, as he has seen and experienced them. Methods of trench construction, ibombs and gre nades, dugouts, and other topics have been explained in detail. Yester day the nature of gas attacks was set forth and types of gas masks were exhibited by Captain Allen. He told of the fighting around Vimy Ridge and the methods by which it was captured. Before very long work will begin in actual trench construction, bayon et warfare, rifle practice and the use of various devices of modern war fare.
