FRIDAY. SEPT. 21, 1917 SUBMARINE SINKING Whether the falling off in the num ber of ships of large tonnage sunk by German submarines last week was due to better partol methods or whether it was the result of convoy ing the larger ships is not stated in the official report, but it is safe to assume that England, as well as the United States, is now affording great er protection to its more precious vessels. It would seem, however, that the smaller ships those less than 1,00 tons are allowed to shift for themselves, and the record of the U-boats would bear out this theory. Twenty-eight merchantmen were de stroyed by submarines during the past week, but of these only eight were of more than 1,000 tons. There i3 reason to believe that the destruc tion of ships will fall off from now until spring because of the shorter days, and by that time the allies prob ably will have enough patrol boats and convoys to insure the prosecu tion of the war more successfully than ever. DEDICATION CFinnnnnaononnnnnsiEinnonoanaGHnDcnnaonnon a a a a a a The dedication of a new school building has been made the occasion of festivities from time immemorial. It means simply the consecration of a new temple to the cause of human ity, for public education is the most worthy undertaking in which a peo ple can engage. Hickory people have reason to cel ebrate tonight. The new high school building, modern in every detail, will be dedicated, and the head of thi state's system of education, Dr. James Yadkin Joyner, will be here to make an address. The Commu nity Club, which has taken a deep i terest in community betterment, will hold a reception for the teachers and the public is asked to be present. As ft matter of right, the people of Hickory should be there. It is their building that is to dc dedicated. It is for their children and the children of future generations. We should make the worthy of the cause. occasion IIAIG'S LATEST OFFENSIVE Sir Douglas Haig's latest offensive will have as a secondary object the driving of the Germans from the coast of Belgium, where submarine bases arc located. The primary ob ject of course is to win a decision over the Germans or at least a vic tory which forced Hindenburg to re treat in the winter. Although the British general may not accomplish sensational results, it must be borne in mind that as long as the allies are on the offensive they have the advan tage of their enemies. They can select their places of attack, this time to strike and be ready with the most artillery and men. The offen sive has been taken from the Ger mans for all time, and an army con stantly on the defensive is bound to suffer in morale. Wilmington, Sept. 21 Neither Dr. Charles T. Nesbitt, health officer, members of the Kenan family, the coroner, nor others who would ordi narily have knowledge of such a nroceedintr. would discuss at all per sistant reports that the body of Mrs. Robert Worth Bingham, interred in the family lot at the cemetery here, had been or would be disinter red. Under the laws of this state such a disinterment could take place without court record and the superintendent of health steadfastly refuses to say whether or not such a permit has been issued, there be incr no record of such a permit. It is known, however, that members of the family have stationed guards at their lot in Oakdale cemetery to prevent any trespass whatever. The only statement Dr. Nesbitt, health of ficer, would make was that he had not made the statement that a per mit had been issued by him. Constable John H. Davis and an assistant constitute the guard at the crave of Mrs. Bineham, being employed privately by the Kenan family, and went on duty last night Mrs. Bingham died suddenly at her home in Louisville, Ky., Friday, JulyJ 27 last, and was buried here Tesday July 31. She had been slightly in disposed for several weeks, it was stated at the time, but her death was wholly unexpeted and produc ed a profound shock in her family in this city. Iter maiden name was Mary Lily Kenan, a daughter of the late Captain William R. Kenan, of this city, and she was about 50 years old. Her sisters, Mesdames J. K. Wise and Graham Kenan, reside here, as well as other relatives. William R Kenan, Jr., of Lockport, N. Y., is brother. Her niece, Mirs. Louise Wise-Lewis, of Cincinnati, under the terms of her -will inherited the bulk of her fortune, estimated at from sixty to seventy-five millions. In 1916 Mrs. Flagler married Judpre Robert Wfcrth Bingham of Louisville Ky., and resided there up to the time of her death. M All visiting brothers cordially invited. D. D. TAYLOR, Councilor. W. I. Caldwell, Rec. Sec Price has always been a fairly accurate iiidex of qual ity. But just now, because of the headlong rising of ma terial costs, price is not a true indication of value. Fifty one cars have been forced to advance prices 20 to 25 per cent. The present supply of Hud son Super-Sixes are built from materials contracted last year. Since then material costs have almost doubled. When that supply of materials is exhaust ed, then, Hudsons. too, must cost more. By prompt buying you can save the difference between what a Hudson Supei Six now costs and what it must certainly have to cost when its price is influenced by the pres ent material market. Wlhen former cheaper cars could be bought at $2,000 to $300 less than the Super Six ao two of them had sales equal to those of the Hudson. That ehows how popular the Super Six has always been as compar ed to other cars. It is easy to imagine how much more pop ular it will be now that there is no such price advantage. The HudsonH Super-Six has made itself the wanted car as com pared with others. It is the largest selling fine car. Almost 40,000 are in daily use. It has established itself as the life-time car.
