DAYS WITH TjHE BUSINESS MEN OF HICKORY To the Editor of the Record: It was my pleasure to make a three days' canvass among the business men of Hickory to secure 100 guarantors for a Chautauqua for next summer. I accompanied Miss Herschey, the rep resentative of the " Chautauqua Asso ciation of Pennsylvania, familiarly known as the Swarthmore Chautau qua. I have had some experience in matters of this kind, both in solicita tion and the sensation of meeting de ficit, but when the lady came to me itaad said it looked like it was go ing to be a failure unless someone should go with her, and did me the honor to ask me to go, upon reflection I agreed. Wfe spent three days and a half, and trisited probably seventy five people. As about forty-eight had already sigjied the agreement;, it was left to us .to secure 55 more, for the contract called for 100, so that any deficit woraW fall lightly on each, and no one was to be responsi ble for any who failed, each guarantor to shoulder only his 100th part. Well, we got the names and unless Avar conditions are prohibitive of stfh things, we will have a Cfcau tattfiua next year. I wish to thani: the -business men of Ifiekory for their courteous treatment of the can vasser, and to congratulate the town on the splendid men of the city who have th faith, the rUlon, the un selfishness, Jo provide for our people this quality of amuement hy agree ing to the contract. I started out with hope, I finished with a steady assurance of the progressiveness of our people. We met with but one rebuff, and that was at once repented of. All were not convinced of the blessings of Chautauqua, but most kindly submit ted to argument, ready to give and take. Others were enthusiastic, and one even telephoned for permission to sign. But Mr. Editor, aside from the matter in hand, I wish to acknowledge the privilege it was to meet busin ess men on their own grounds, see them in their daily environment, be hold their attack on life's daily battle field, and find out faith growing in their invincibility. It was an educa tion to a preacher, and I immensely enjoyed the experience. 'I also take pleasure in saying that the pastor of the larger churches signed the con tract except one who will not be here t.t the time. Also a number of la d.;es signed. J. G. GARTH. GLAD TOTESTIFY Says Watoga Lady, "As To What Cardui Has Done For Me, So As To Help Others." )One hundred guarantors have been secured for the chautauqua next sum mer, thanks to the energy of Rev. J. U. Garth and Miss Grace Hershev, who -represented the Swarthmore comtpany. In Mr. Garth's buggy they made the rounds and put the question to the business men of the city. The result was that an the signatures were obtained. iMr. N. W. Clark today received a letter from. Dr. Roscoe F. Mouser, son of Squire and Mrs. John W, Mouser, telling of his safe arrival in France 'yvith a Pennsylvania ambu lance company. Di Mouser says France is a wonderful country, and that the people have suffered terri bly from the war. They like Am ericans and the former Hickory boy likes them. There were interesting and entertaining talks by differnt members; the pastor gave some jolly readings, and a good talk and Mrs. Murray, who always has something good for us, was never more interesting than on this occa sion. Plans were made to provide testa ments for 44 Lutherans in Company A, 21 in the company of drafted men who left last week,, and one in the Lmcolnton cavalry. MiRS. J. E. PERKINS AND FAMILY No No FREES HIS MIND Things Gen. Edward Said to Boston Reporters Boston Herald. Maj.-Gen. Clarence R. Edwards, commander of the 26th division of tne United States army, is not wasting much sympathy on "cold feet" sol diers and conscientious objectors- at least, he told the reporters last evening that he recomlmends a pair of woolen stockings for the timio. men and the placing of the objectors at work digging bombproofs. Al so, he added, that if the objectors were as averse to digging as they are to carrying guns then they might be given "innocent plyers" and be as signed to cutting wires m front of the trenches. He said that the regular army men are not passing as fearless soldiers; for even the regulars who have been under fire scores of times, as has the general, are not d void of fear. He deJclared hat fear, fellowship and hardship will serve to unify and sol idify the 26th into a division that will equal any set from this country wlith reference to the smooth man. rer in which various local military units have been absorbed into the a vision, he expressed keen satisfaction and stated: "There will be no Lon coln rifles or Concord guards or oth er similar designations of local un its just the 26th." He pointed out that the men in practically all branches of the ser vice, with the exception of the in fantrymen who "go over the top," are exposed to danger of equal degree. And that reminded him of an exper ience while he was a member ox Gen. Laiwton's staff. There were men who considered an assignment as staff offacer a pretty safe place, but Lawson, when under fire, almost always kept a considerable distance in front of his men and, of course, his staff accomipanied him. One night after the staff had re turned from a day's work in which they had been for several hours in-a particularly dangerous position with Gen. Lawson out in front of the troops, one of the staff officers op-1 f ened a letter from his mother. Andijr in it she wrote that she thanked the j U Lord that her son was on the staff Q anu not expu&eu iu me uaugci uiai : fell to the lot of the privates. I CHIROPRACTOR DR. E. E.
