Fifth Street, Philadelphia, Pa. Schools will open shortly, but now that they are Idle an excellent oppor tunity Is afforded to have them thor oughly Inspected and piles of old pa pers, rubbish and other litter cleared out and all fire hazards removed or properly safeguarded. Stove pipes and furnace equipments should be In vestigated and all defects corrected, and every method adopted which spells protection against and preven tion of fires. The annual average of 620 echool houses damaged or de stroyed by fire can easily be lowered If a little foresight and caution are exercised in a thorough cleaning up and inspection campaign before the school term opens. It is to be remem bered that the lives of children are involved In the necessity of careful ness in this important item, and no amount of expense or caution should be spared in protecting these Vtttls ones against danger or injury by fire. A hint to school officials and Janitors ought to be sufficient. Fire Facts. By the Associated Press. London, Oct. 6. The best sum mary of Great Britain's food control plan is given by Lord Rhondda, the controller, in the first issue of the new fortnightly magazine he has be gun to publish under the title of the National Food Journal. Lord Rhondda states: '"My policy, broadly stated, is to fix the price of those articles of prime necessity over the supply of which I can obtain effective control at all stages from the producer down to the retailer. Such prices will, as far as possible, be fixed on the prin ciple of allowing a reasonable pre war profit to those engaged in the production and distribution ot the particular commodity. Indeed the policy will be one in effect of deter mining profits at every stage, though it will take the form of fixing prices. i"Every effort will be made to pre vent speculation, and unnecessary middlemen will be eliminated, Ex isting agencies I make a strong point on this will be utilized for the purposes f distribution under license and control, and under tht supervision of local food controllers to be appointed by the local author ities. I "I am anxious that producer, seller and consumer should realize that , prices are not being interfered with i ' . i i i : j-1 i I in a napnazara way or wiuiuut pui-, pose. While I am primarily con-; cerned with the protection of the con-! sumers, I have to see that the legi-j timate interests of food producers; and other traders are safeguarded,' and above all to. avoid as far as practicable action which may tend to ' curtail the necessary supplies. j "It is, of course, impossible that in this crisis supplies can be pro vided to the same extent or with cnVi rprrnlnritv no in t.imfiS of neace. 7 A- and the consumer should also under ( stand that he must of necessity pay j high prices. My object is to see thatj supplies are forthcoming as tar as they are available, and that the prices J are not exc Issive. i "I am glad to be able to say thatiS the general position of our essential food supplies is satisfactory, but 1 cannot urge too strongly on everyone the absolute need for econjomy in the use of all foodstuffs." It was also brought out that be fore -the tragedy Miss Browning had. written to the young lady for hex interest in the young man. Cilley left this after noon for Greenville to spend Sun day with his sons at Camp Sevier SUBSCRIBE FOR THE RECORD Chevrolet "Forty-Ndne" Touring is ''light-footed," tut not too lighr. A motor car should not be too heavy nor too light. If it is too heavy, the weight is liable to affect its efficiency, and ex pense. If it is too light, it is likely to be dangerous and not keep to the road. The Chevrolet is medium in weight, but heavy enough so that the car will remain on the road at all times, and- light enough so that the machine will not be hard on tires and will be economical in the matter of gasoline consumption. The important things depend on the weight of the car. The car that is too heavy is not .nly a burden on the road, but its own weight affects the mechanical efficiency, for the heavy car is likely to rattle itself into the scrap heap. iModel "Four-Ninety" Touring is a favorite for the reason that it is an economical car to own. Now equipped with demountable rims, tilt ed windshield and other new refinements. Price $635.00 f.l o. b. Flint. IBoick Gara HICKORY, N. C.
